My neighbor just gave these to me. My research so far said they are commercial,

can they be used for amateur radio?

Great for Ham. You can use Chirp software to program them or Wouxum's. Of course you will need a programing cable. Universal radio sells accessories and will give you and idea of the radios capabilities. There's probably cheaper sources as I didn't do an extensive search. Manual programing is also possible, but software is so much easier.

When sold as a business radio I also read that the keyboard will come locked . If that's the case you will need the software anyway to unlock it.

They cost more but if you got trouble universal has your back. They are still on the side of mom n pop kinda people,not like giga parts n other big name places

Chirp will unlock it if it is indeed locked. They are decent radios but they do have a huge bug in them. They have a limited amount not times they can be programmed, once you hit that limit it will brick.

They are worth using, as the Chinese radios go Wouxun's are the best made.

Universal is also a real radio store, unlike some of the others. Gigaparts is local to me, and they are in their own words, primarily a computer store. IOW they don't take ham radio seriously. For quite awhile they didn't even set up at the local hamfest, let alone Dayton. They do go to the local 'fest now, but I don't know if they do Dayton even now.
Radio is a sideline to them. So I certainly don't give them preference when it comes to buying a new radio or whatever.

If Gigaparts hadn't started selling ham radio equipment, they probably would have been out of business by now. But they still refuse to act like a radio store.
And by the way, they're not big. They have one store, and it's not a big one.

I used to live 45 minutes from Universal. They up and moved about 30 minutes further.
