I opened the radio up, but I don't see how to get to the bulb. Does anyone have any specific tips on replacing the light bulb?

Hello, there is some good info on the ts-50 yahoo group regarding backlight issues,it worked for me,they have some pics along with directions on a fix,the backlight issue on my ts-50 had nothing to do with the bulbs they were fine, hope this helps.

Thanks Chris, but the images look to have been removed, and there are no links to any of the references. Plus I don't understand what these guys are trying to say. I'm not technical minded, so that may be the problem with my trying to understand these professional or technical types.

These small mobile HF rigs are extremely complicated and chock full of all kinds of parts and circuits so they can do all of this universe of things that they do. I wouldn't begin to take a modern HF rig apart to try some kind of repair unless I knew exactly what I was doing.

Send it off

Good luck

One would think replacing the bulb would be do-able but I see a lot of posts online from people asking how it's done on a TS-50S and no answers on how to.

Maybe you can call a Knwd service center and ask. I would do that before paying out an $85.00 bench fee plus parts to replace a bulb.

light out TS50

Change the bulb yourself-get the service manuel-front of the radio
has to be lowered-removing 4 screws (face plate).Might take 1 1/2 hrs
be very carefull you dont bugger something up. Good Luck.

Found schematics and a service manual on mods.dk here: http://mods.dk/manual.php?brand=kenwood

Just scroll down until you get the links for TS-50.

If you can get to the bulb I would replace it with an LED. You might need to provide a current-limiting resistor in series with the LED, but you'll get a WAY longer life out of an LED than a light bulb and you can use any of the huge variety of LED colors..

before you attempt the above,.......

set the squelch fully closed ,
turn the volume to min,
power on the radio, ...... does the light work?
