quite the contrary, I am still around, my deal with my host went south and I lost my site. I have everything I had up there though so when I dedicate a weekend to it I will be getting a new site with a new host. Its all about motivation

Why not just get a fixed IP addy from your ISP and host it out of your own machine? I host a half dozen or so websites right from the computer I use here. Fairly easy to do, and very cheap. If you can't get a fixed IP addy from your ISP, you can set up a dynamic DNS account for free from a number of places, have it automatically point your domain name to your home computer, and still host the site yourself.

DTB,

A couple questions froma novice, since I just set up a machine here to do just that...

what server software do you run and how do you manage security?

I set it up on an XP Pro machine with IIS. I figured the cost in electricity to run the machine 24/7 would be about $10 USD/month, so I'm kind of up in the air with just buying a hosting service.

I use Server 2003 to host some of my sites and FTP areas. I use DynDNS with an auto updating dns since my IP changes often. It doesn't cost anything to go through them. One can use dreamweaver, MS Publisher, Frontpage, and a few others to setup webpages.

When I am away from home I use logmein if I need to restart or make changes to the server or router.
