Base Looking for recommendations for a tree mounted antenna

I'm in need of replacing my old 1/2 wave antenna that has been mounted almost 60 foot in a pinetree about 24 years ago. The antenna has been up there so long that the limbs have now grown up and over the antenna and now has it bent over to almost a 45 degree angle. I haven't used it in well over 10 years and have been out of the hobby for that long. I'm needing recommendations on a antenna that I should use in that same tree.

I want something that will last hopefully as long as the one that's up in the tree now. But I'm hesitant to put a fiberglass antenna up there and feel that aluminum might work better. Also, would rather not have one with horizontal ground plane radials as that might cause additional issues with getting it up there and with the surrounding tree limbs. The Maco and Tornado has them but it appears the tornado's is smaller.

I'm looking at the Maco Alpha V 5/8, Solarcon IMAX 2000 and the Sirio Tornado 27

I've attached a couple of photos of my current tree bound antenna.

Not aluminum that you mentioned but in my area there are lots of A99’s in the trees. Some have been up for years and some have come down in storms...with or without the tree.

New I-MAX 2000’s have lost favor with lots of folks on the forum because of the manufacturer shortening the length and creating SWR issues.

I don’t have an antenna in a tree but have considered it. It would be an A99.

welcome to the forum (y)

I agree with you about the A99. It is too risky to buy a I-MAX 2000. From what I have read the major difference between the I-MAX 2000 and the A99 is that the MAX 2000 can handle 2000 watts. Who the heck needs 2000 watts for CB?

My A99 is 61’ to the feed point, sorry tail tree wasn’t as tall as it lead me to believe. But with the antenna being 17’, I’m still in a pretty good spot.

I think.

Hopefully.

What about an Astro Plane everyone discussing

I've always liked the Astro Plane. Many years ago I replaced my A/S Super Mag with one and it was the 1st time I could talk to my friend's cousin, who was on Long Island, from my QTH (far North Ct.), but I'm pretty sure  that unless it was mounted above the tree it wouldn't be a good fit. I'm pretty sure that folks sharper than me will add to this discussion (as many have already)

I once owned an Astro Plane back in the 1980s and loved it. But you would almost have to assemble at the top of the tree. Not wanting to do that. What ever I get will be put together on the ground and the only thing I want to do at the top of the tree is mount it on the existing pole (if the mounted pole is still secure) and place a ground cable to it. Then trim away all the 24+ years worth of tree growth.

A99 in a tree can work really well. I climbed a 80' evergreen tree when I was younger and put a fiberglass base antenna similar to a A99 out the top and strapped it on with bungee cords. it was there for 20 years.

I ran a stock radio and a power microphone and the locals who ran power never believed me that it was a stock radio.

Although I wouldn't recommend climbing a tree like that - lucky i didn't kill myself - I had a rope from my belt to the top of the antenna and dragged it up behind me. Crazy stuff you do when you're young.

I don't climb trees. lol. I'll leave that to someone else that I'll pay. Just want it to be as simple for that person climbing as possible. That's why something like a imax 2000 or possibly the A99 with no ground plain radials would be easiest to hoist up the tree. I guess a fiberglass antenna is just as good as an aluminum in a tree. Want something dead simple that doesn't need a lot of tuning. Hate to set the swr on the ground pole and then have swr issues in the tree.
