Looking for set up advice.

Thank you, I have read a few posts about the work you do and it sounds like you are very good at it. I took a computer tech. class in high school and we worked with some circut boards during the 2nd semester, it was then that I found electronics where not for me. I'm sure radios are much simpler but all the meters, measuerments and calculations needed to make sure the resistanc, current and voltage is all correct always gave me a headach. So if I need any work done to my radios they will be sent to a tech. like you who knows what they are doing. Now if the tech. doing the work needs a motorcycle rebuilt then we could most likely work something out ;)

Exit 13 pretty much summed up the radios for a cb/SSB base or mobile. Get s good one that hasn't had any mods done to it. Send it to a good tech for recapping and tune and alignment. Get your antenna system setup right and you will be good to go. There are a lot of antenna threads around the forum. Again some say that rg8x is fine, the reason I suggest better coax is not really for loss, but rather better shielding and an outer sheathing that can handle the elements properly for long periods of time. Again this is JMO. If you plan to use a vertical antenna, lmr240 or lmr400 would be what it would use and do use myself. Again JMO, but stick with the companies that are known like the ones I listed. Again JMO. And in the end have fun!!

Good deal! I'll investigate the Sirio some before I pull the trigger but if a 5/8 is that much better than a 1/2 I'll be going with a 5/8.
For longer local range, go with the 5/8 over the 1/2. I've got a whole collection of 1/2 wave base antennas including an A99, a Workman Bandit, a Radio Shack Crossbow and a Shakespeare Big Stick. For maximum local range, my 5/8 wave IMAX 2000 beats them all. For skip, however, I find that the 1/2 waves - the A99 in particular - do better.

Good luck.
