What kind of wattmeter are you seeing the PEP output on? That seems like a lot of power from a 300A ?

Still seems high for that amp. Have you ever looked at it on a scope? I have not read the specs on those tubes in a very long time either but I could be wrong about what it should be putting out?

with my Cobra 2000 and 148, i was seen 260 rms close to 680 rms maybe i need to check the 9-volt battery

Does it have the 6LF6 tubes or is it an older model? I believe there were three different tube variations over the years & maybe four? Some converted to the 8950's but they cost an arm & a leg now so not very smart. I was thinking 500 to 600 was about the Top of the output for them but again it's been a very long time since I kept up with them.

yes the 6lf6 tubes use a different meter close to 680 like 690 with wm-1 meter

I like the WM-1 meters so well that I own & use Four of them. One is the original with the Black Face. Have a blessed day & God Bless.

I have heard BBi say that some of the 300a came with 8950 tubes and were capable of 1000 pep.

300a came with 8950 tubes

The transformer supplies 13 or more Volts to the tube heaters. The 8950 heater is rated for 13 Volts, not 12.6. Would be no trick to set it up for that tube. Would require cutting a foil trace and adding a wire to the socket of each of three pairs of tubes. Could be the 6.3-Volt TV tubes were cheaper than the 8950 in 1976 or so. Can't remember seeing a 300A with 8950s, but that's not conclusive at all.

Always figured the reason that model showed higher power per tube that expected was from hot-rodding the heater voltage. I have seen peak power from this model that should make me skeptical if I hadn't seen it many dozens of times. Never mind how many ways a wattmeter can be fooled. A 'scope won't lie nearly as often.

Dern shame the model that came after it would never perform that well. The 350Z model was a dog, pure and simple.
