QSY is the Norm there. You call on 27.555 USB, make a contact, and jump to another freq if the other operator is so inclined.

Another thing about SSB on the FCC 40....

Why does it seem that 99% of the operators do not know that they can use the other side of the carrier? I.E. USB

Most radio ops think their radios only have 2 modes... AM and LSB... USB is a deserted wasteland...

Flip the switch and it is quiet... quite amazing... :cautious:

I think education about the modes of transmission would help. That's the reason I keep pushing everybody to getting a ham ticket. Learn more and get more privileges.

I grew up in Miami. Back then, years ago as a teenager, the CB was a mess up there. Every channel was crowded and the foul-mouthed, idiot operators with dirty linears were ruining it for everyone. I started to study for my novice license.

Then I moved south to the Keys, where CB was a whole different world. Respectful operators: mostly folks talking from house to boat; no foul mouths; no splatter. Even the local hams would hop on CB just to chat. It was great. We used CB and marine VHF to teach Boy Scouts about communications for their merit badge. Fast forward: the problem now is that we have very few local operators down here.

I'll probably review the on-line materials and take the technician's class exam one day if the proposal to expand technician class privileges gets approved. Until them, I'm probably going to stick to CB because it does everything I need.

I was down there a little over a year ago and had my ham radio all hooked up And when I was at the southern most point in the United States I started calling CQ and people were looking at me like I was martian or some thing. So apparently a microphone in the hand is almost an alien concept. That was the last time I'll ever be down there I sold my piece of a time share.

Back in the 23 channel days we used 16 a lot for SSB but after the switch to 40 , channel 16 died real quick.
The old 23 channel radios were built were the clairfier shifted both tx and rx out of the box .
If you tweaked the variactor diode just a bit, you could " slide down" a little because there was ah, well, a little bit of room between channel 15 and 16 ( wink wink alpha channel) cough cough and talk.
Now days I talk to Larry , DX Man often when the band is open.
We usually make a quick contact on 38 and the move up to channel 40 ( or there abouts) and have our qso.
I usually do not have many problems from bleedover running from ch 34 up on SSB.
My Lincoln in the truck has a channel guard in it that helps the adjacent channel problem.
The RX is good on SSB.

USB??? That's for the 10 meter band guys. Actually, I've noticed that too except that I have on several occasions picked up Quebecois French on USB 17. It seems the USB mode is at least popular up there.

My dad was Vietnam era U.S. Army. A buddy of his used to like to talk radio-related stuff with me. I recall him mentioning some Vietnam era military walkie talkies that were strictly USB. (He also loved to talk non-stop about how they used NVIS over there.)

Tyhe funny thing is that back when I was heavily into freebanding in the early 80's everyone WAS on USB. It seemed everybody had a home frequency on USB and rarely went to LSB.

The way the hams operate is if you are below 10.00 MHz you use Lower Side Band, if above you use Upper Side Band. One thing I have noticed SSB is being used in what was traditionally FM only on two meters.
But of course you know this. This was for the "Others."
 
27.555 is Dead as AS said . QSY ? Tried that all during the contest . No conditions for me . I been doing it too long & know a decent contact on 38 LSB is pretty much a crap shoot ! I've done it quite often , but carrying on a decent QSO ??? Not happening especially now w/ DX being scarce for quite a while .jmo:)
