maco 103c

It probably has components of both horiz and vert. Maybe one of the engineering types here can chime in and toss some deeper knowledge at this.

Man-made noise: This category includes the usual machinery sparking, faulty signs, auto engine sparking, etc. As you can see from thinking about the sources, it largely derives from spark generation and hence produces useless RF over a wide frequency range. Most human-made noise is vertically polarised and of ground wave propagation. Hence, ground-mounted verticals are most susceptible to this category of noise. A horizontal antenna generally shows an immediate 3 dB reduction. Additionally, antenna elevation also helps reduce the noise level”.

Why are all television transmissions horizontal?

Supposedly in order to be more immune to noise sources and less interference from land mobile radios which were all vertical polarity.

Agreed. Everything ever written states that man made electrical RF noise sources emit mainly vertically polarized signals.

Although horizontal antennas are generally quieter than verticals - that isn't always the case. I've gotten plenty of noise when I point my beam at horizontal power wires.

Do you suppose that has anything to do with the fact that they are being emitted from a huge horizontal radiator? Most spark sources of noise are vertical however arcing on a power line from insulators etc. can be coupled into the wires and re-radiated as horizontal polarity even though the original noise source was vertical.

Yes, it did occur to me.
But I didn't want to assume.

I like having both polarities.

Agreed. Nothing like being able to select whatever polarity propagation is spewing out at the moment. Those of us that have run dual polarity beams in the past have a tendency to just laugh and shake our heads at all these discussions about what polarity is better for DX. The truth is that neither is better than the other because of all the variables Mother Nature throws at us several times in the course of a single QSO.I have had to use the opposite polarity that my contact was using on more occasions than I can remember due to propagation. From my viewpoint for working DX, mounting a beam vertically just places more wind drag on it, distorts the pattern due to interaction with the mast, and makes it a real bitch to stack antennas. Those and those alone are the reasons why I go horizontal and I have been doing that way for going on 35 years and have enjoyed great success with DX.
