I was helping a friend replace his Antron 99 with a Maco 5000 yesterday. The Antron always had a very low SWR about 1.2 to 1.The Maco was placed in the same spot on the same mast at the same height (36 feet). He used new coax which was checked before use. Try as we might we could not get the SWR below 2.5 on the Maco. We had mounted some of these Macos for other radio friends with no trouble at all. We finally gave up and put the Antron with the new coax back up and the SWR went back to 1.2. The only thing I can think of is the Maco is aluminum and the Anton is fiberglass. He lives quite close to large high voltage electrical power lines. They are less than 100 feet from his antenna. Would the aluminum Maco be the cause of the high SWR? Since Thr Antron is fiberglass the electrical lines don't cause the high SWR?
