magnet mount vs. roof mount

1) Remove Wilson 5000 from box and read instructions.
2) Install stinger in coil and screw onto magnetic base.
3) Place mount in a location where routing the coax through a door seam is short and non pinching.
4) Adjust swr so 1 and 40 are identical. Sometimes you must cut the stinger to accomplish this. I have had to cut the stinger on every Wilson 5000 I have ever owned.
5) You are done and don't screw with it any more other than removing the coil/stinger when parking in a garage. Don't forget to periodically remove the mount and clean the top of the truck and magnet covering.

The only thing I'd change of that is the route of the coax shouldn't go through a door jam or window. If it goes through the door, the chances of the door gasket not sealing is greatly increased. Same with a back hatch. The constant openning and closing will also deminish the performance and life of the coax (granted the coax can be changed on the Wilson).
The Wilson uses a two piece antenna connector. It unscrews from the cable and the small connector is just barely larger than the cabl itself. If it were me installlng it, I'd drill a 3/8" hole under the rear seat and run your cable in there. You can buy a rubber grommet to seal the cable to car and protect the coax's outer insulation from the metal edge. It makes for a good, clean, airtight penetration through the vehical. And it is one that would never be seen if you traded/sold your car.

was able to route the coax without smashing it in the door jamb, instead of going over the hump went along side and switched over was able to use the rubber seal to the frame over the coax no problems. swr is 1.5 good enough for me. made several QSO's today with the s45hp above the 40 cb bands. 73s

ii would like to put perm mount but the interier lights on the headliner has 12 plus all the oh shit handles to remove... :(

The antenna is going on an Chevy Trailblazer SUV so running the coax under the vehicle would be impossible, it would have to go in through a hatch or door weatherstrip opening.
The Wilson 5000 is a crimped on 1 piece PL259....you must be thinking of a K40 or Wilson 1000 antenna.

i got a new vehicle 05 Chevrolet trailblazer, and i decided to order a mag mount for my Wilson rather then putting a hole in the roof. Question: since it will be a magnet mount would it help to run a strap from the magnet mount to the ground wire of the rear high stop mount light?
if this helps i will be running a radio that puts out 100w max. no amps for the mobiel.

I bought 2 used magnet mount antennas...1 is a wilson 1000 and the other is a wilson 500.....cannot get a flat match on either....anyway...magnet mounts can damage your newer vehicle too....I went to try the wilson 500 and stuck it on my roof...when I went to remove it it put a big scratch on my roof.....magnets attract metal and there was a bunch of staples on the magnet....so check the magnet every time to make sure it has not picked up anything.....and also buy new....I thought I would save a buck by buying used....fat chance...cannot get a flat match on either wilson antenna.....I bought 3 used magnet mount antennas....a wilson 500 and a wilson 1000 and a no brand....and out of the 3....the no brand has the best match....go figger.

Also....if you live in a town with tree lined streets like mine.....the antenna is always hitting branches....also avoid going thru a fast food drive through.

i hate magnet mounts because they will destroy the paint underneath it.
me personally?? would i drill a hole or go mag mount ?? idk, depends on the vehicle. depends on how "nice" the vehicle is. if it were a newer vehicle, i dont think i could bring myself to drilling into a perfectly good roof, BUT, thats just me.
the older truck im driving now, i wouldnt have a problem grabbing the drill from the shed.

mag mounts have their purpose, but... i HATE what they do to the paint. if its an older ride, then i personally wouldnt care what it does to my roof.

different strokes for different folks.

ive always ran mag mounts ,yes they do make a round circle but ive
been lucky enough to be ablr to buff it out.i suppose if i had a beater
i wouldnt mind grabbing the drill either.ive ran a uniden grant and a texas star 250hdv
with a mag mount wilson 5k no issues

nice install and setup btw

Thanks hotrod.
the s45hp barely fit where its at. I'm still thinking about a puck mount and a mr coily co-phased.

also, when u do magnet mount it is different then hole in roof install... make sure whip is proper lenth. i was able to use a mfj 259, found out match was @ 28.5 flat and 3.1 on the cb bands. its nice now 1.2swr on cb band with an 4 transistor box in line.
p.s i bought my magnet mount brand new (not something i want to save a dollar on) :)
