I have a ranger rci 2950 dx I am considering one of these Amps as the radio I have lacks power to talk skip on 11 meters . Anyone using these Amps I have a friend who is a fellow trucker he has a 2950 orange didplay and had the radio modified with a RFX 150 Amp , would that work with the newer radios ,

18 wheeler i run a modified Wilson 2000 trucker Antenna it has a shaft of a browning 25 watts out of the back of the radio I get out ok just need a little help now and again .
That is probably the biggest misconception in radio-land. I have worked all over the world with a barefoot 2950DX on 10/11/12m all while mobile. Mobile to mobile to Luxor Egypt and into the Kalahari desert of Botswana, and all over Europe on 11m. 10m I worked into South Africa, South America, Europe, and North Africa all with just 25 watts pep on SSB. Yes extra power makes it a bit easier but it is in no way required to work DX.
I've done Perth in Oz whilst static mobile on an 18w president jackson and hp4000 sirio mag mounted whip, last time i was out a couple of months ago rattled 5 stations in s.e england in 30 mins with a faulty s9 that was barely pushing 2w before rf feedback set in, again from static mobile and many contacts into europe barefoot,
i generally run between 80 and 160w and I'm confident of hitting anywhere on planet, an amp gives a wee boost, but if conditions are good as Garth CK says you don't "NEED" one, but if conditions are poor the biggest amp in the world ain't gonna create propagation.
If you are going to use an amp, check out cheap and cheerful RM kl203/p, they do the job nice and sound not too bad on air for a cb amp.As is external won't cause excess heating in radio, major case of drift and if either blows you can still use the other.

Like Robb said, antenna setup 1st if it's not already done, good antenna, coax, and connectors. Since using an HF radio, (guys please don't blast me for it please), I will say hands down they kick the snot out of most cb radios on SSB. Both my icom 746 and kenwood ts140s kick butt!! Yes more expensive, but to me worth every penny. And they can be had used from $300 up. A nice kenwood ts50, alinco dx70, icom 706, kenwood 480, just to name a few. Paid $300 for my ts140s in good condtion. Maybe a bit much but it works well. The icom 746 I paid more for, but am very happy I bought it. Since buying it, my TNT600hd has sat in the closet as I don't need it! 100 watts and decent conditions, I talk wherever I can hear. Save your money, and get an hf radio if you want to have a good SSB radio.
Problem is I always seem to get covered up by big base stations , I just would like to have the extra power when needed I woyld have to move the radio from the top shelf where it's bolted and mount it on the dash of the tractor i drive 18 wheeler and if there was a radio and Amp on the dash that could draw unnecessary attention from a thief ,that's why I like the idea of having an Amp fitted Into the radio it can stay up in the shelf above my head where it can't be seen as easy . I have no problem getting out its just there are far two many big base stations out there .
