I'd like to know, what some would suggest for this.
I need a inexpensive starter antenna for 2meters and 70 centimeters, for a base setup. Any suggestions? Which is the best?

J-pole is cheep and easy to set up

i would suggest maybe a higher gain antenna

my Comet GP-9 may be too big or more then you are willing to spend...

but Comet GP-3 may do quite well for you

Either way
Put it as high as posible

these frequencys will get exellent range
only if antenna is high

mine is 52 or 54 ft at base of antenna
i hit repeaters 90 milesout
talk simplex 40 to 60 miles out

2 meter/ 70 cntmets antenna

Thanks for the responses. I really liked the link masterchief.
Now can the 2 of you or anyone come up with a good one that wouldn't have to be built?
I'm going to build one, however, a customer wants to just get an omnidirectional and not do so much assembly. He is also wanting the best of all worlds, ha. Works great, and doesn't cost much, but doesn't require much work. lol
I really liked the response here, he just wanted different. lol

Hey, I'm not saying I'm 100% correct and the other's arguments do have merit, but if it looks like a duck....

Besides, I'm just poking at the ribs on this one; no need for anyone to get upset. I'm glad you got that Bob!

Hello Marvin:

I bought a Comet of Diamond Antenna years ago for 2 meters and 440. It cost like 60 dollars. I mounted it on one of the vent pipes sticking out from the roof. It would work better if I put it on a mast and rasied it up say 20 fet or so. But it allows me to hit all the repeaters and such. Low cost and east to install.

I used LMR400 coax, about 70 feet worth.

dual band antenna

I appreciate the input from everyone. Thanks very much.
I've read all the catalogs and even tried a few. I just don't do much on these bands. Locally there isn't much interest.
We were just trying to get several of the local hams (new) started. Don't seem to have any local elmers around. All the local hampsters seem to be less than interested in helping.
Thanks again for the input!!!

dual band antenna

Masterchief;
There was an observation I'll make, for the jpole antennas. With the cost of some plumbing metals today, I'm not sure that "inexpensive" would apply for that antenna. ha
