I was entertaining for my low budget the old 21-524 model.. $20-35..

The only time I use the meter is

a.) tuning the rig for the band( its a tubed rig and requires retuning when changing bands)
b.) tuning the antenna (if running a band I don't have a wire up for)

When actually talking I have the meter off, I only look at the ALC meter on the radio. If something should change I would see it there. I want the ALC meter to barely move when talking.

Will the ALC change if the SWR changes?

Yes, it will throw the rig out of tune and I will see it on the ALC meter

These actually were pretty accurate & consistent all through their production runs.
A little hard to read due to size but useful.
Also even though the switch on the unit is marked avg. &pep if you read the description on the box
it says peak power not pep.
