Just trying to compare these two, and wondered if anybody had any experience with these two tuners? Sparing the Mighty Fine Junk debate, please.

Just going by the reviews, the '962 doesn't have the best reputation in the world. It seems to do well if input power is less than 300-400 watts but not for much over that. I have no direct experience with either tuner but have known of quite a few of the '989's that were working at legal limit with no troubles. So, just going by hear-say, and if price wasn't a biggy, I think I'd opt for the '989.
Take that opinion for what it's worth, and I don't think it's worth a lot...

I used to have the old model 989C and the newer 962D. The first 989c they sent me was a train wreck from the standpoint of quality control and I returned it. The second one was a little better so I kept it. The 962D was fine right out of the box. I have to say that both tuners would load up a a wet noodle on 80 meters and the cross needle meters never failed me.

I also tried one of their high end auto tuners a few years ago and got rid of it within a month. It took forever to tune, was the noisiest tuner auto tuner I've ever used and the watt meter readings weren't even close to being accurate.

I opted for an LDG AT600Pro and that's the tuner I've been using ever since. LDG makes a great product.

Either of the MFJ tuners would be ok but you may want to give some other brands a look first. If you go with MFJ just examine it in detail when received to make sure all the parts are inside ;)

For a few dollars more I'd go with the Palstar AT2K or AT2KD tuners. You'll also get 6 Meters and a brick that will tune a bottle cap. JMHO.

If you need to stay with the MFJ brand, then I'd choose the MFJ-989D. It's a proven model.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. I actually already have the 989C and was considering buying a very clean 962D from a friend of mine. (He upgraded to the Palstar). I acquired the 989C and a Balun Designs 4:1 balun a couple of years ago. I opened the 989C up, and didn't see any signs of arcing. Did have to re-adjust the balanced line input and ceramic insulators, as they were way off and loose. The meter and light works fine, but it's the old style lamp; not the new LED one. The 989C tuner is really BIG, so I was considering going to something with a little smaller footprint (hence, the 962D). I also have an LDG Z-11 Pro, and that little thing is awesome. Tunes very fast... might consider going to the AT600 with the outboard meter later. That really looks like a sweet setup.

I own alot of MJ products and have ha d no problems with any of them. 6 of the MFJ products I own are indeed Antenna Tuners, 2 of them are 962D and one of them is a 989C They all work great with no problems even under higher power Alot of the bad you here is operator error trying to tune an antenna thats way out of band or has a problem of its own or not reading and following suggested directions or instructions and that Ive seen first hand same goes for Ameritron amplifers people were popping those because they were not tuning them right and did what they wanted or what felt right and didnt even think about the manufactures suggestions.

I have 3 Ameritrons and love them all and are great amplifiers although one aiam rebuilding because its old!! I understand like anything else thats mas producted that lemons do come off the assembly lines from time to time just like anyother product mass produced like cars trucks snowmoniles Tv's radio equipment ETC But I also know that it is not always the case ;)

I've owned many different MFJ items too. I have had occasional problems, but [slash]they[/slash] I fixed them all. :D

That sounds pretty typical, from a lot of the guys I've talked to that have new MFJ equipment. They do really stand by their "no matter what" warranty, though. Glad to know the tuner I already have is a decent one... I got a good deal on it.
