First, howdy all. New member. I have a President McKinley and I'm using Superstar DM-452 power mic. If you have this setup, or any other power mic with this radio, I could use some advice on where to set the mic gain for the best audio. Thanks!

Edit: Yes, I fat fingered the title.

Welcome to the forum!

I don’t have a radio like yours but do have a couple of those mics.

I get the best reports with the the mic level set on the first dot and the radio’s mic gain set between 1:00 & 2:00.

Every radio and mic could be a little different even amongst the same model. The numbers that someone else gives you is just a ballpark. The best way to set the level is with another radio. With headphones and without an antenna connected, you will be able to hear your transmitted audio. This way you don't have to rely on reports and will know for sure. Start with it low and slowly turn it up while talking. When you hear it start to sound crunchy, turn it back down a bit. I would not run a station without a monitor radio.

I have the McKinley and use a RF Limited Extreme 2018 with mine...

First thing you need to do is open up the radio and turn up the modulation pot...Once you have it peaked, then set the Mic gain to peak (full on the bar graph) and then back it off 3-bars...Then you can set your Mic gain on the Mic about half way and you should be good to go...All Mic's are not created equal tho, so you may need to play with the Mic's settings till you find the perfect spot to leave it.

As for the tuning inside the radio I was talking about, check out this thread on tuning the Mckinley...The AMC is small, but easy to get to, and the SSB adjustment is also right there close to the AMC pot...both need to be turned up from where the factory has them set.

Thank you very much. Exactly, what I was looking for.

There is no real answer since we don't know what has been done to your radio. Stock with only a conversion, slight peak and tune, or wound way out on modulation. At this point all you can do is get on the air with some locals you trust. Put the radio at say 50% and set the mic at maybe 20% to start. You can then work up from there, when you get too much audio they will tell you. Just don't be that guy that cranks em both wide open.
