mic recommendation

my base radio is a galaxy saturn running with a jb2000 amp.right now i"m just using a stock galaxy hand held mic.with all the nice mics out there the thing is is that i had talk back installed in radio, which i like alot.was told with talk back that i won"t be able to run any type of power mic because it will squeel alot.

everyone says i sound great and all but just the idea of using a cheapy old stock mic doesn"t really appeal to me.iv"e tried using my nonpower turner mic from mobile which works great in car but on my base they say i sound like i"m pinching my nose together when i talk.

with what i run one friend said even though people say i"m sounding great now i could be alot louder with a better mic.i"d appreciate any all suggestions, thanks

your going to have to lose the talkback. you dont really need to hear yourself talk. as for base mic's astatic eagle or d104 is probaly the loudest mic, the turner +3 is a close second as the compressor circuit really makes a signal sound smooth. the sadelta echo master mics i would put at a very very close 3rd. the single meter version has a little more punch than the 2 meter version (newer). the best thing about base mic's is your ability to talk across them at a farter distance. i do almost 2 feet from my d104's and 16 inches from my turners and sadeltas. be aware that turning the gain up to high doesnt make you louder, it makes the mic more sensitive. if i go more than 60% you can hear the old lady in the kitchen as well as you can hear me. yes they are that sensitive.

coondog,

I had the same problem. I was able to borrow some mics., from some friends to test to see which one sounded the best. Everyones voice is different and each mic. will have a different sound. I ended up using the Astatic Silver Eagle, I just adjusted it down until it didnt squeel like a pig. Good luck.

hey guys,i see you both mentioned the astatic silver eagle,i take it its a lollypop mic? when i first got my saturn about 9 years ago a cb tech friend of mine had me try a silver and then a gold lollypop then a echo 2000.at the time i was just starting out.

back then i couldn"t figure out what the problem was but i couldn"t get any of them to work for me.the echo 2000 was a real pain with all the adjustments.what ever mic i tried everyone said i sounded like crap.

i eventually started using a turbo 2018 hand held and everyone said it was working great but after a few years i don"t know but i think it just got old or something and started squeeling bad.

so sarge i take it you still have your talk back but just had to turn down your eagle? the thing i really like about talk back and i know there not %100 true to what you sound like is it helps me to see if i"m putting out to much echo (i like just a touch of it)or if i"m squeeling out there or sounding really crappy.

with all the nice power mics out there to kick out your audio i might have to take carls advice and take radio in and get rid of talk back.the guy that put it in warned me about that i couldn"t use a power mic and he even hooked up a silver eagle of his and it really squeeled.

sarge, when you said you just turned your eagle down does that effect your audio output? guys,i know all this makes me sound as if i just started out in cbs yesterday but after all these years of using hand helds mics i"m just starting to think about a real base type mic since i do have alot more experience now then back then.

back then if i had some experience i probably would be using one today,i just got fed up with trying to get them to work.

it's kind of hard to tell here C-dog ? none of us really know how your radio is tuned ? .....I also prefer talkback nowadays , it does let me know when IM over modded , but I use a touch of echo (TRB-1) as well along with a few noise toys here and there , in your case ,I would think a very good grounding of your base unit would and could help you as well ? as I said ,I don't know how your base is tuned ? if the audio is off the scale that could even cause you feedback with or without talkback ? As far as the D-104 loollies go ,you only need to crack the audio up on those for the most part, guys seem to think if they don't see there needles moving that they aren't getting out after modulating , this is sometimes very far from the truth and you are getting out all that you would need as far as your modulation is concerned. My suggestions would be a non-amplified D-104 lolly might just be what the doctor ordered ? There's also the Astatic 575M6 B (tear drop style) if you can find one ? Also another that would more then likely work very well for you would be the Astatic Road Devil NC power mic ...that might just be your best bet because it is a NC mic and they have always seemed to work very well where talkback can be an issue for guys and there radios. There's a good possibility that mic would work very well in your situation. good Luck to you C-Dog

coondog,

I think Switch Kit summed it up better than I can. All I know is what works for me may not work for you. The radio may be set up different than mine and my radio may not be real loud but it sounds really clean and clear. I wish i could be of more help. I would try what Switch Kit posted and see what happens. Good luck and keep us posted on what you come up with.

hey all,i"m still trying to decide on a non amplified mic for my galxy saturn base.i checked out most of the ones you all suggested that i could find.i seen one cb shop came out with a new one.
its called a astatic 636L-WG.anybody have any info on this one? the only thing these truck stops have around here is diesel roadkings.
kind of scary to order a mic and not like it.can"t be doing that with so many different mics and always sending them back.i"m not sure about my radio having any thing special done to it.
when i bought it years ago the guy did go inside of it real quick and did something.

I ran them all and will tell you that you are gonna have to have a switch installed to turn that talkback on and off or have a volume control installed if you dont want to mess with that you are limited to which mics you will be able to run. You may get away with a noise canceling power mic handheld like the astatic road devil. I also love the Sadelta base mics they really hammer but again are EXTREMELY TOUCHY to background noise. The ultimate sound quality would be the sure 526T they sound phenominal on these Galaxys They are a really nice high quality Mic. When new these mics were about $130.00 but Ive seen them for $25.00 - $50.00 I use them on my galaxy 2527 with the talkback and after adjusting the audio volume or sesitivity on the mic it worked great but i also had a volume control on my talkback... Goodluck on your mic search and I would seriously think about replacing the diode or resoldering it to get rid of the talkback or atleast have a variable put in for the volume or you just may end up fighting a losing battle with these amplified / power mics...

hi TonyV225,i had a astatic road devil power mic laying around here for quite some time and i tried it and it really squeeled like the movie deliverence, lol.with so many mics being recommended here i ended up with a astatic 636L.nice looking mic with wood grain.

people out there says it really sounds great.i also take and use it in my mobile radio,(galaxy 88),.not to long ago i ended up snipping the wire for the talk back in it so now i"m going to look around for a good power mic for them.

i"ll have to go through these posts again and see if there were any recommended.thanks for the reply..p.s.i"ll look around for the 526T.
