I always thought that both antennas had to be the same make to work the best.. I guess not, huh?

I have seen some set ups with all the antennas being the same and then I have seen the hot antenna different from the elements being used. When was up in the NW corner this one guy was running a squared boxed tube antenna for a shootout. This was a Skullcracka made. He did beat a few of the 8 pill boxes.

It really is still a vertical, no change in polarization ('shape', yes. Polarization, no.). The horizontal part acts as a capacity hat for the vertical part...

Correct, the capacitance hat fools the antenna into thinking is longer than it really is, antennas are so gullable.
