what are mosfet's ??? im hearing that cobra and uniden cb's with mosfets installed can do over 50 watts pep ?? what do such mods cost ?? who does them ??

Keep in mind that you can get those same power output levels in the 29's and the like with regular bipolar transistor if you know how to do it. Not sure what the cost comparison is, though.

DTB how would you compare a cobra 29 with full mosfet mods done by yourself to say a justin tuned 50 watt 29 ???? not trying to start a flame war here just looking for COMPARISON

I can't say that I've ever had the opportunity to test a Jutin-tuned 29 and know it was done by him.

Non-linear in this case doesn't mean distortion. All basic CB's are non-linear in the driver/final anyway, which is necessary for AM modulation to happen. The FET just tends to allow stronger modulation because its inherently non-linear by nature. it doesn't follow a straight response curve with an increasing drive.

For a barefoot radio I still prefer a 1969 just because of the higher carrier power thats possible.
I prefer a 10 watt carrier swinging to 40 watts much better than a 5 watt carrier swinging to 40 watts or more. Truckers prefer that "squelch breaking" power of a higher carrier up here.

I still haven't had a chance to play around nwith these ekl transistors.... but I might... a guy brought a cobra 29 into the shop that wants an additional rf amp stage added in (trucker, so no amps). I think I might try doing it with an EKL transistor.
Should work out ok... if not I can always say I tried. I just wish fets had a lower impediance.

They are great if you want to drive an amp with swing.
To answer your question about who does them..... pretty much any shop will do it. How much is hard to say, every shop is different. At our shop we would charge the same amount that we do for a high power peak.
If you shoot DTB (or any other techs here) a PM he will be able to give you a better idea of prices.

This is a test for the new moderators. I can think of at least 4 posts I'd delete already.

Why would you have them deleted?

It is not their fault they were sold radios that went bunk.
