My first intercontinental and first 40m contact all in 1

you are right, not sure why I wrote USB, I was working LSB, just got caught up in the moment when I was making the post

Really you could use USB or LSB as the mode is just an unwritten understanding for operating on the different bands.

It may open up a pandora's box for discussion but I have yet to see any RULES or REGULATIONS stating what mode to use on the different bands.

There is freq allocations for CW, Digi etc..etc... but when it comes to voice it is just an unwritten understanding that 40 meters and below is LSB 20 meters and up is USB.

I am sure someone will chime in and correct this post if it is wrong, and I hope they can back it up with either an FCC regulation/rule stating such.

Hint: 9MHz IF :)

There is no rule dictating USB or LSB on the bands (except 60m) but calling CQ on 20m LSB is like winking in the dark. You know what you are doing but nobody else does. You may as well turn the volume all the way down and call. You can also cause unnecessary QRM by calling on 14.200 LSB when someone is on 14.195 USB for example. Sticking with the proper convention is always the better idea. Personally I do not like mode versus frequency anyway. We in Canada have bandwidth emission rules that allows us to operate pretty much any mode as long as it fits in the bandwidth allowed which is typically 6 KHz on the HF bands. I can operate SSB voice on 14.001 USB legally if I want and even use narrow band FM on 21.105 if I want too as long as I watch the deviation. Not that I would mind you, but I could. I get a kick out of a lot of USA stations telling me I am out of band when operating USB 0n 14.125 or 21.150. <gotproof>
