My old friend President Jackson.

if its as solid on ssb as my 980ssb in my mobile i will be more than happy, with all the extra channels it will be great, the 980ssb also has the dual course/fine clarifier but it is locked,, i have never had to touch the course on that radio

the plan is if the new ss jackson is a good radio ill put it in the mobile and give the 980ssb to my son for his room to replace his cobra29 classic.

also the 40-50watts on ssb will be nice compared to the 980ssb at 15watts ssb

Can't that detent be eliminated? Or that dual POT changed out with another dual POT without the detent?

I imagine that if you have the patience and skills of a surgeon you could do it w/o batting an eye. However for those of us who are less than that it could prove to be difficult and quite possibly end up destroying the part.

Too bad they don't make a drop-in 3 turn pot made to retrofit these radios. They would probably sell a few. If it could go 10khz lock-to-lock, that would mean 1 1/2 turns for 5khz of slide from the center position. That would be enough not to be so sensitive as to make fine adjustments impossible or inaccurate. The 10 turn kind is for the birds - IMO. Unless the have a small crank knob or finger divot on it.

I know we'll soon find out. What worries me is the claim: Jackson circuit board all the way. If so, then it's likely to have the same quirks that need addressed just like the original.

I darn near hit the PAY button a few minutes ago, but I guess I should wait for a preliminary review.

sorry i can't read this whole thread but.....jackson??? really? come on. if ranger is gonna clone & re-issue something, why not the grant export? why not the hr2510? why not an ar3500 :) there's probably a couple other better choices, but come on, jackson???? tell this guy to clone a grant please! re-issuing the jackson is like ford re-issuing the pinto

Well, I don't think I would have used that analogy. True - this radio wasn't known for its great AM performance. I've read your comments and insights to that regard on this forum. Probably correct too if they are building it to exacting specs of the original Jacko.

However, those of us who DX and want it for its xlnt SSB quality - it is definitely a keeper if it is like the original. Bob85, Exitthirteen, and Jazzsinger all had a great deal of experience with the black face and silver face versions and speak very highly of this radio. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't have bothered to give it a try.

i was gonna use chevy reissuing the vega, but i'd like that idea. of course back in '82 my '71 vega had 383ci of smallblock chevy-way before de-stroked small block 400's were fashionable-a worked turbo 350, narrowed 12 bolt with 3.73 to 1 gears, and just enough massaging to run 11's...or 12's...or 13's...of course like a smart dxer, i only lost at the track, never on the street ;)

anyway, i don't spend much time on AM anymore, at least on 11m. for that matter, not all that much time on 11m at all. i've owned all the versions of the jackson, silver, black, previous JA incarnation, even a french uniden. the grant is just a better radio, on ssb as well as am. are 5 bands neccessary? who goes above 27.805? for that matter, who goes above 600? very very little QSYing from 555 much above 580. is 1 transistor capable of 50 watts any better then 2 producing 25? the grant still had a better design & was more efficient, in any mode. the grant chassis was just the all around better design. sure it needed a few tweaks, but the jackson needed more to be equal to the grant. anybody who's been around since the end of the 23 ch days, when sidebanders changed xtals to get up above 27.305, then above 405, were in ecstasy when the superstar 360 & other such radios appeared. compared to a galaxy PLUTO, the 360 was primitive! i'm not a fan of ANY galaxy, but the 95t & 98vhp or whatever it is would outclass ALMOST any of the early exports, which the jackson is. the grant on the other hand....the benchmark to what EVERYTHING else is compared. export & legal versions.

I admit, I'd also like to see the Grant.

Must be something to do with an abundance of Jackson components or something. I have been trying to find an original Grant for years. All I manage to see are all hacked up or look like crap. Or have a Superhawk price.

I know I'll probably end up buying one of these though.

band D is standard 40 channels. here are some other pics:

Looks like a blend of old and new. If it is anything on ssb like it's predicessor it would be a keeper at that price even tho it does look a little funky electricly.:D
