New Cobra 29, first type certified "Smart CB".

I can't help but wonder about possible legal issues with that iRadar app, could be a problem in states with laws concerning radar detectors and police scanners in automobiles.

PS: I've seen Big Betty's go for good money on ebay.

The Cobra 29 smart cb is the greatest thing in the world for a millennial who doesn't care for cb.

I'm not going to go too much into politics here, but I predate the Millennials by just a little bit.
(We have a general "open discussion" subsection on this forum, it's great for political statements.)

I have three Cobra 29 LTD radios, and one 29 GTL.
In terms of reliability and performance in an emergency situation which Cobra radio do you think I'm going to grab?
Not the one with smt and microprocessor chips that's for sure...

Still, I decided to share the news of this new Cobra, because I figure some hacker out there would enjoy it. Plus when is the last time you saw a new CB radio come from Cobra?

I have more "standard" CB radios than I'll ever use, it's nice to see something fresh come along every now and then!
This "Smart CB Radio" may help to get the younger generation interested in radio, and I'm very excited for that possibility!

Since the buttons are on the mic I wonder if the " rewind-say-again" voice recorder may be in the mic and runs off the 8 volts from one of the radios mic jack pins? Maybe the Bluetooth stuff is in the mic as well?

Saw that there is an ext PTT and ext MIC jack in the back of the radio. Are they there to satisfy some "hands free" governmental BS?

I think you are correct, that may be to satisfy a government mandate, for certain states to allow use for the cell phone functions while on the road.

For certain states you can disable the iRadar (I think) but the radar is hidden away inside an innocent looking cb radio.

The playback mod is an idea, we will just have to wait to see what is really going on inside.
Also I haven't found anything proving that this is indeed an F.C.C. compliant radio, but I haven't looked either.

Would be nice if they just made a new CB/SSB radio. And not like the newer 148's either. I don't mind the 29lxle chassis and face that much, but the center button is just an accident waiting to happen. The shaft is just to flimsy. Fix that issue by adding a button or getting rid of something that is not needed and add a button for the menu. Anyhow, rant over. It's just a type accepted cb/SSB radio other then the uniden 980 aren't that good these days are they. How does the newer cobra 148'as work? Worth a hoot or not for SSB use?? Just curious about some of this. Thanks for any and all replies. Good day to All.

Wow I have been out of the CB market for a while I still thought Cobra made a SSB radio

There is a Cobra 148 still being manufactured but it is just another failed product from China. The first step in the rapid decline of Cobra radios was the Soundcrapper line.

Yep. I've heard the newer ones are mostly junk. But I wasn't 100% sure. You confirmed it psycho!! A good cb/SSB radio is what I should have said.

Edit: Looking on Cobra's site they no longer list a 148
The old (made in the Philippines) Uniden Grant XL are much better radios than the Chinese Cobra 148.

It's too bad I'm not interested in the Uniden 980 (smt)
w9cll, you seem interested in the C.B. hobby, why don't you "join us". :p

Is the fact that they're SMT the reason why you're not interested?

I only ask because SMT is the future of this hobby, learning how to work with these components early on would probably make life much easier down the road.

I am ill prepared to go beyond the antique (through-hole).
Yes, I understand the future of technology is SMT, because they can build smaller things, and it's become cheaper to have something created using smt vs. through-hole.

I lack the hot-air station and some other tools to bring me into the 21st Century, I am progressing towards SMT work, slowly.

I am afraid, (I just know it) I would destroy a multi-layer smt board with a pencil iron.
So I haven't bought a 980 yet, one day I will.

After all I have plenty of modern smt junk that's broken, just begging for me to practice on.

Hi,
I'm now looking (researching) at the Uniden Bearcat 998 SSB.

Anyone have any thoughts on it?

I'm more old school, but if it is quality???
