first welcome to fourm and cb. im a little late on this but 5 miles on your
setup with hilly terrain isnt bad . i have hilly terrain here too. the biggest
thing with distance is your antenna choice AND location. with a firestick
type design you can get away with it mount just about anywhere depending
on lenth. generally i wont get anything smaller than 4 feet. with mag mount
antennas they work better on the roof. [as most do] . so if ya want more distance
change out antenna. id leave radio as is and maybe add a power mic.

From my experience (very limited) I know the antenna is critical as well as the coax. I talked to a guy a couple of weeks ago over 20 miles away in N' Adams Mass on 38 lsb in the tacoma (Not a short skip. Just good old line of sight. Yes, it is mountainous here). I use a Sirio T5000 on a permanent mount on the roof with a Uniden 980 barefoot. No amp. The radio is nothing special so I know the antenna kicks butt. An excellent antenna with rg8x coax will do the job for ya. Does for me. Welcome to the forum. The folks here have more knowledge than I could comprehend in a lifetime!
