New radio on a budget

It's time to buy a new radio and was looking to buy new with warrenty. Looking to spend up to 1000.00 and not over looking at hf rigs and also multiband rigs to. Any ideas come to mind?

1000 is a pretty good budget. You could definitely get something good for that price. You can pick up many multimode rigs for less than that.

The radio gods may say nay but if I were going to plunk down a grand I'd want a Yaesu FT-897D

If you don't mind used there are plenty of Kenwood Ts-2000's out there that can be had for around $1000... Heck I know of one going for $500 but I am not telling where....

Iwas looking at both the kenwood and the Yaesu also. And will buy new.

I would second this. The TS480Sat is a excellent radio. I have had a Yaesu 857 and 897 D and would take the Kenwood any day over the Yaesu.

I just bought an icom 7200 ....so far I really like it. I had the same budget....looked at used for a few weeks...decided I wanted a warranty as well. My usage will be base and mobile and settled on the icom. Gigaparts has it for 999. Eham reviews are very good...HRD with one cable, good filtering, rugged for mobile use. I bought a ldg tuner as well, one cable hook up powers from the radio....Good luck

Still checking options, I like the Ft897d and the 7200 also. Would be nice to get all bands and all modes. I have time to think and look at the radios

I would second this. The TS480Sat is a excellent radio. I have had a Yaesu 857 and 897 D and would take the Kenwood any day over the Yaesu.

I am looking at the 897D to possibly get into MS and EME so I'm curious why you prefer the Kenwood over the Yaesu. Does the 897D have "issues" with it?

I'd rather have just VHF/UHF but that doesn't look like it will be happening as I don't really want to buy used VHF/UHF previously sold.

For half your budget you could get an Alinco SR8T and still have money left over for a tuner and a modest antenna.

I had an SR8 for a few months. Its not a bad radio at all. The weighted VFO knob spinning on a flimsy plastic encoder shaft was the only thing that turned me off.
