New to Ham. 10m and 2m questions

So i can get across the entire US without an amp or anything other equipment on 10m?

Yes, BUT....

From wherever you happen to be, it might be difficult to contact a specific spot in the US at any given time. The band is open to where it's open and closed where it's closed, and very difficult to predict exactly when it'll be open to the desired point.

In other words, from North Carolina (an assumption on my part), you might want to talk to somebody in Wisconsin, only to find that the only places the band is open to at the moment are Twisp WA and Alamogordo NM. It happens.

Thanks for all the answers. Does anyone make a 10m radio anymore? Or is there anything under $200 that will work 10m?

I think you'd better take another look at that VE manual, an up dated one. (I do that stuff too.)

well, I contacted my VEC and asked both those questions.
the ARRL (my VEC) informed me that the 9th edition is the latest and greatest edition.

page 49 of the 9 edition clearly states that elements may be taken in any order.

If examiners have a special situation where an examinee has prepared for an element that doesn't comply with the ARRL/VEC ascending order recommendation, its office will honor the VE Team's decision.

So you can go strait to Amature Extra without passing/taking the tech. or general test? I always thought you had to pass teck. before you could get a General ticket. And pass General before you could get an Extra ticket.

When I took my general, I had to show my tech license and they copied it and it was
with my papers for the general. If I didn't have the tech card with me, I would have had to
taken the tech test as well as the general.

As an example of when a VE Team may choose to permit examinations to be administered out of ascending order might
involve a currently-unlicensed former General class licensee who comes to your examination prepared to take the General
written test (Element 3), but is unaware that he will still have to take the Technician written test (Element 2). In this scenario,
the VE Team will usually allow Element 3 to be taken before Element 2 since the examinee is prepared to take Element 3,
but is probably not prepared to take Element 2, and should not be forced to take Element 2. If this order is permitted, be sure
that candidates clearly understand that each CSCE conveying element credit is individually valid for 365 days from the date
it was issued. No subsequently-issued CSCE will renew another CSCE's validation period.

I said a csce could be issued for any passed element in any order taken,..... I never said the FCC would issue a license

Look hard at the RCI 2950 DX radio for a 10 meter rig....Very nice radio and priced decent

I would say go for your general class ticket,that way you will get all of 10 meters and a good chunk of all the other bands as well....I have alot of fun on 15 and 17 meters talking to Europe and Japan..Have been hearing Europe and Austrailia on 10 meters as well

YEP you can work the world on 17 with low power ..... I sometime use only 5 watts and a R7 vertical

Thats the same setup I have.. Minus the preamp......I have not seen a need to use my tuner yet,running a 10-80/75 dipole and my 6m and 2m are seperate antanas ...
