New Uniden 980's on sale

Picked one of these up, just for the heck of it.

Plugged in and shouted at my son on AM..about 10 miles away in his pickup, and talking off my attic dipole. He said it sounded great and had a great copy. I was surprised since it shows a little under 3 watts and the dipole is horizontal.

Flipped over to SSB and I’m getting feedback through the speaker, and it’s heard on both ends. Talkback off. Going to try it in my pickup today just to eliminate any setup issues.

Ordered a couple, week or so ago.....tracking states "out for delivery". This morning? It's Sunday, and tracking is thru USPS. I DO NOT BELIEVE Port Lavaca Post Office is open, able, or willing to deliver. Post Office motivation dwn here is minimal, common sense is limited, and apathetic.

I noticed the same issue on the last two 980’s I bought. These radios are the “new” board, and that seems to be a problem with them. I had two older board 980’s and that did not happen, but both new boards have “talkback” in an external speaker. Not really noticeable in the mobile, but definitely noticeable in the shack.

I noticed it’s actually doing it on AM also but not as loud.

Im afraid this is going back to Amazon.

I noticed it first with the stock mic, then tried others. The stock mic shows so little modulation, that I don’t believe I tried to turn it down.

This rig is showing me 7 watts SSB with a 1000hz tone.
better send it back, shoukd be more like 10 to 12 watts pep, 3.9 on am

OK, so the stock mic is apparently really weak. No issue seeing about 12 watts with virtually any other mic I own. I have a D104 on it now and it sounds good.

And....unplugging my meter(Daiwa CN 901) from the PS seems to fix 99.9% of the feedback issue, and the little that remains can’t be heard on the RX end as it did before. I can leave the meter inline and use avg power, but plug it in to read PEP and I get the feedback.

Unsure what could cause this; hadn’t seen it in this setup with other rigs.

Anyway, I’ll hold on to it for a bit and see if anything else comes up...and if it does it’ll go back to Amazon. Other than the strange quirk, I like it. Bigger than I expected. Only thing I don’t like is the 4 position mic gain and two position RF gain.

Does the meter use the same power supply as the radio? Maybe some kind of RF leaking into the power? Yes the stock mic is weak, I took mine apart and removed the big round black rubber piece that blocks the sound.
