More memory channels too.. my KG-UV2D only has 120 IIRC.
You know, I've had a couple days to mess with that Icom HT I won from here, and I've had Alinco and Yaesu HTs also in the past, and I'm still blown away by the value provided by these Chinese imports.
I really like the Icom T-70A, but I've looked online and I see that they run between $220 and $250 new. The feature set is decent, and they are both dual-banders, but there are actually a few drawbacks to the Icom compared to my KG-UV2D:
1) The battery supplied with the $250 Icom is NiMH, which is old technology compared to LiION. The supplied battery is only 1400mAH.
The battery supplied with the $100 Wouxun is LiION @ 1700mAH.
2) The $250 Icom does not have dual-receive. The $100 Wouxun does have dual-receive.
3) The $250 Icom does not have a dual-frequency display. The $100 Wouxun does have a dual-frequency display.
4) The $250 Icom does not have a charging cradle, instead it has an AC adaptor. The $100 Wouxun does have a cradle. I prefer the cradle because it gives me somewhere convenient to store the HT as well as charge it.
5) The audio output is more powerful on the Wouxun, 720mW vs. the Icom's paltry 395mW. (As measured by ARRL labs in these HTs respective QST reviews)
The Icom does have 2 advantages, though:
1) It scans much faster than my Chinese HTs.
2) It has more memory channels.
I just can't justify spending an additional $120-150 for faster scanning and more channels, while still having to live with the lack of some features provided by the Wouxun.
Otherwise the Icom and the Wouxun are equivalent. Both are of solid construction, and I've had no trouble beating the crap out of my Chinese HTs so they are rugged enough for me.
It's crazy to me that the big three won't do more to compete with the Chinese. Had I bought that Icom I would have felt genuinely ripped off when I compared feature sets. Since I have both Chinese HTs and comparable models from the mainstream brands side by side to do a direct comparison, I've decided that I'll probably not be buying a handheld from the big three again until they can compete in terms of value.
