On SSB barefoot , no amp I run my power all the way up and the mic gain at about 12 oclock and just talk normal. Great Radio you will love it. I've had both the 30 watt and 80 watt version.

That's where I run mine as well on ssb. On am I run it the same except I put rf power around 12 o'clock as well. I am also very very happy with mine.

almost happy

Well I am almost happy with mine. I get good reports from it on AM and SSB, but the talkback only works when it wants to and the same for the echo. Sometimes it sounds real good. I just use a touch of echo on AM and when its working it sounds good. But then it will have tons of reverb and sounds like crap and nothing changed on my controls or microhone. I tried the one that was supplied with the radio and my 636L and it does it on both. Any idea what's going on. It has done the same thing with a ac to dc power supply as well as in my pickup and semi.

I do like the radio and I hope this will be an easy fix. I love the memory presets more then I ever thought I would. But the talkback and echo problem bugs me. I just bought it and i hate to have to send it back to be fixed already.

might not be the radio, it could have something to do with an SWR or grounding issue. Make sure your SWR's are under 1.5 and that the radio is grounded well either in the house or car. Some mounts do not offer grounds these days.

If you are going to run a radio wide open/full output, and it has MOSFETs in it; then you better have a heat sink on it AND a fan kit. Or else they will 'pop'. Doesn't matter if it is a Magnum, RCI/Ranger, or a Galaxy. Same/same.

I had a twin fan kit installed on mine. It does help to keep it cooler. I guess now I will have to figure out how to ground this radio properly

Robb on SSB radios get no where near as hot as they do on AM and an old small 2in computer fan does work wonders if attached to the heatsink

Mine did get hot on SSB. The radio seems to draw more current on SSB than on AM.

So, I put a homebrew fan kit on it:

Sounds like some connections/wires are intermittent.
If you just bought it and it is under warranty, send it into the Warranty Repair near you - after you get an RMA from Sam Lewis @ RF Limited.

My 959 runs pretty warm during extended transmissions on the left back and the left rear side of the radio. It's still set at 4 watts am dead key and 12 watts SSB power with the 2018 mic cranked all the way up as well as the radio's mic gain. I've been thinking about installing a heatsink :pop:on it or at least mount a fan on the back to blow on the radio.
