tbh, i never realized it was actually a dead short. I just always noticed it showed 0v. I always did it with a meter and a power strip with a nice on/off switch. quick flip, nothing, reverse leads, try again.In series, only. If you put them in parallel, but in opposite phase, you get a dead short. Always best to test this hookup with a current limit like an incandescent bulb in series, or turning up a variac slowly with a low-current breaker in line.
