PEP BOYS "Burrito-Dx" ???

considering it's not available on their web site, I'd say it's a "joke".
it's obviously an astatic mic.

I don't know...Pep Boys has a location in MX. That radio is an export so it's either a joke or something marketed out of the MX location. I'm leaning more toward bogus myself.

Anyone else notice the 'tones' switch on the front panel?

The selections look to be a bit too far apart for a switch of that type.

Looks like a Cobra 148 GTL-DX/SuperStarFM 360 to me. Cool - though . . .

GOOD CALL, ROBB !!

OK, you guys got me.

Sure enough, this is a (highly) modified Superstar 360FM. My son is a rabid CBer, and so are a lot of his friends. I made this "PEP BOYS" radio for him, just to give him a rig that none of his friends have, or can get. A little one-upsmanship, I suppose.

Anyway, everything you see on the front panel controls works. The +10kc switch gives the "skipped" channels, and the 5kc/10kc "step" switch allows the "zero" channels (i.e 27.405 or 27.400). The switch I used for the TONES actually has that spacing between positions. The keyup tone is really cool, and I will post a new thread with a schematic for those of you interested in building one.
I found a company on Ebay who made the custom faceplate, S/RF meter insert, and mike sticker for me. Like Space Cowboy mentioned, I used an Astatic RD104E mic housing, but it contains a stock Superstar Mic element w/o an amp board.
This project was a lot of fun to put together, and the best part is that my son loves his new radio.
Thanks for the nice comments. 73s.

Very nice job; looks OEM.

Would like to modify my 10m SS FM 360 I got from eBay that got dipped in Katrina. The guy I bought it from said that it had an audio issue; turned out to be just a bad speaker. Anyway, I re-capped it, replaced the S-meter, replaced the speaker, cleaned the pots, and aligned it. Doesn;t look anywhere as nice as yours though. Your son must be proud of you for doing it for him, as he definitely has a one-of-a-kind radio now!

Modding that tone switch for 5/10kc jump is what I want mod it to. But I'm sure that your upcoming article for everything you did and how you did it could prove invaluable for those who are fanboys for this radio - which is considerable in both the EU and the US. Can't wait to read that upcoming article of yours 399!

Cool face plate. I looked hard to see if was photo-chopped.

At one time you could get vacuum tubes for your radio from Manny Moe & Jack.
