I shot this picture 40 yards behind the house.
I was using a 55mm lens on Nikon 5100.

After I took the picture I then cropped it using the camera to do it. Then ran it through a editing program from Nikon.

Still getting use to this camera and all it's buttons.

V.nice, Larry.
I'm also very fond of my 50mm prime lens. They are always very sharp, low f/stops; but a little sensitive in outdoor light. But always as sharp as a straight razor. Always nice to have an interesting subject for composition!

Nice image. Learn to use raw mode and get Nikon Capture NX2 which every inch of detail out of a Nikon nef file. Light room and ACR are nice nut NX2 plus noticeably more information.

For what its with I have been a pro photog here for 20 years. I still shoot mostly film (medium and large format, no more 35mm) and do mostly fine art stuff not. Closed my studio a few years ago.

I use to be into 35 a lot also, but that was many years ago. Got good at shooting with manual camera's.

I also have NX2 which I us mostly now. I also have Adobe Photoshop Elements 11, but haven't gotten into using it yet.

But I still enjoy the taking of wildlife, but not into as much as I us to be.

Here is a pic of one of our pet squirrels.

Beautiful shots DXman, a very majestic subject you have there.

Not to dirty the thread but I recently have become interested in possibly picking up a beginner camera and starting to do some photography for fun. What do you all recommend?

Well Bundy, that is good question, one that would be hard for me to give a good answer to.
There are many many good camera's out there now and like myself, I spent several months reading and searching before I figured out what I wanted.

A good source that I have used for many years for learning what's hot and what's not is the Popular Photography magazine. I have been taking this one for probably 25 yrs and have learned a lot from it. I think it runs for about 97 cents an issue when subscribed for 3 yrs.

Good pix Larry but you needed to speed up the shutter time on the humming bird. LOL I remember when I first starting shooting 35mm film and was at an air show. I got some really nice photos of a C-130 taking off "without the engines running" LOL. The props were frozen in time as it were and looked as if they were not even turning. I have since gone to digital with a Canon and an 18-55mm image stabilized lens and also a 75-300mm telephoto lens with circular polarizers for both lenses. I haven't taken many pix in the last year or two but I must start up again and get some more practice shooting in RAW format and editing using the Canon EOS Digital Solutions software. We are going to Jamaica in February so I want to buff up on my photog skills.

If you are thinking about an SLR then you have lots of choices. The one thing to keep in mind is they all take the same picture under the same conditions. One is not better than the other, some people are brand loyalists and will only use brand X. Don't fall for their traps.

Any of the entry level models from all the MFG's will do exactly what you need to get started. All of the camera bodies are generally the same, hold several and find the one that fits your hand the best. Remember the glass takes the picture not the body.

Go to a camera store and ask questions, don't judge your discussion based on images you see online as most have been Photoshopped to death.

Well Garth, I really didn't have much time trying to get a faster shutter speed on that little guy - so I shot in "auto" - my favorite mode, lol..

Here is pic of Gretrude - I am feeding her peanut butter on a stick.
This is what she likes:
Peanut butter
Watermelon
Avacado - this is her favorite!
Oreo cookies
Peanuts - almonds - cashews - etc.
Pears
Crackers
Nutella (chocolate with hazel nuts)

I hear ya about shooting in full auto mode. LOL That's why I need to get more practice so I can use the camera as it was meant to be used. Nice pix of the squirrel. We have many of the damn tree rats here. We have a small river directly behind the house along the eastern boundary of the property for about 350 feet. The top of the river bank is lined with big oak trees so there is plenty of acorns for the squirrels and chipmunks that abound. On squirrel has made it's home underneath out front doorstep. Our dog lays in the front entryway just inside the door which has a full length side-light window. The squirrel will sit about six inches from the window which drives the poor dog nuts. The squirrel is smart enough to have learned that the dog cannot get it and will just sit there watching the dog go crazy on the other side. Every time I try and get the camera to take it's picture he takes off. I guess he is smart enough to know that while the dog cannot open the door I however can. LOL

Try using a polarizing lens. :)
