The Ranger has high performance PLL/VCO, high sensitivity receiver, and higher tolerance electronics via the latest surface mount technology (SMT). Bottom line, the RCI will give you more consistent performance. RCI has also has exceptional modulation like the Galaxy on AM if adjusted properly (Maybe not the 2950), but certainly their 6300/6900, and 62/69FF line. Galaxy is a great collection of radios dating back much further than RCI, but they simply have not kept up with their manufacturing contractors (RANGER) who decided to make their own line of monster radios using the latest manufacturing and engineering technology. I would get a Galaxy 98 for the nostalgia as it does continue the Galaxy tradition of the most audacious and intelligible rigs in CB land. Only thing is there are other players now that also sell hardcore rigs with specific features as differentiated from Galaxy who holds to more CB'ing centric features like echo, lit panels, modulation light, and that well respected Galaxy name and look. ... I think I want a 98VHP now even if I already have something better, the 98 is just a badass radio, indeed.
