Preacherman modded 50 watt cobra 29

Freecell, I then have a question for you. First, this Justin guy that used to be on this forum claimed all kinds of big numbers on his tunes. He also built 50 watt Cobra 29's before mosfets. Whats your opinion on his radio's and work?

So if a guy wants a hopped up Cobra 29 from the 292 radio shop what can you do for him? What do you tell him?

Just wondering, thanks.

I would like to see a response to that question. What exactly can you do with a Cobra 29 at your shop?

Yea, me too. He sent me the shop phone number. I would like to see it typed right here so we all can see.

most likely he will not post it here, or anywhere else.

i suggest you call Jack (freecell).

he is a good guy, and there are reasons he doesnt post stuff like that.
took me a long time of head-butting with him before i called him.
now i just dont expect answers from him on the net like i used to.

just my 2 cents,
LC

Wouldn't ignorance be a better word to use freecell.
It would be but he said exactly what he meant, but if you cater to a clientel you should not speak ill of them to their faces because they have dictionarys and eventually will figure out they're being belittled and then your client base drops but this is only if your client base is stationary as his is not so he's secure in the fact that meeting a former customer is highly unlikely.

Answers are'nt freecells bread and butter so don't waist your breath on questions.

Justin's work was top notch. Some of the stuff he contracted out wasn't so good. The 50 watt Cobra 29's wasn't his own invention, but was something Bill Good engineered. For the uninitiated, Bill Good was one of the best radio techs that we have been blessed to have seen. And I don't just mean CB or export stuff...Ham gear also. Bill Good was the guy that worked with Ranger on designing the front end for the 2950dx. They didn't accept all of his design...

Anyway, running a 50 watt peak radio with a 2 watt carrier is just plain retarded, regardless of who engineered it. If you're running an amplifier that requires that low of carrier but will take 50 watts of drive, then you are either using the wrong amplifier or driving the snot out of it way past what you should be doing. The Justin/Bill 50 watt mod would key about 6 watts and would show about 10 watts AVG power (as measured by a Bird 43 or similar). However, measureing peak, it shows between 45-50 watts. Some of this power would be displayed as harmonics. However, if you have seen the spectrum analyzer pics posted of radios with this mod, you'll see that it wasn't all that dirty especially compared to some of the hack jobs being done that have been discussed in this thread. The mod they did does not volt the final transistor, nor does it disable the AMC. It does it using a 2sc1969 transistor, but with extensive mods to the radio. Let me know if you would like more info.

mack you're babbling again.

Loosecannon , you know I love you man. So the Internet is one thing ? and totally live is another ? Damned near makes me wonder why anybody bothers to butt heads in the first place huh ? I think it's like a
agitator on the radio , it's all about reaction that feeds them. I think Mackipooh might know a little bit about that. :)

yep,

Jack may be a bit of a firecracker on the net, and looking back at some of my responses to him; so am i! LOL

but when it came down to it, and i needed a definitive answer; he asked me to call him on the phone.
i did, and he was very helpful.

everyone uses the net and the forums in different ways, and for different things; and thats ok.

i think its a good thing for all of us to remember that the guys that own shops are not doing it because they are philanthropists, and thats, ok.

one of these days im gonna catch you on the air switch!
later,
LC

You may be right Cannon , I've met a few guys off these Forum pages and I must admit , they were the same in real life. Go figure huh. At least I didn't have to expect the unexpected.

I also understand that words written on these Forum walls can be taken the wrong way by many , when they were totally meant another way. It happens and I've noticed myself, that I can be good at that . :headbang

I suppose we can only do the best we can with what we have ? and nobody really needs to explain themselves to anybody if they don't feel like it ? It's all good Cannon. (y) With some folks , your damned if you do or your damned if you don't , can't win for losing there buddy, this is when acceptance can be the key for me. :)

Happy Hamer...you should really check out your facts before you decide to opine. I didn't take that clip...the customer did.

Freecell...your willingness to take a shot at people is well known. For the record, the radio in question was keying 8 watts, swinging to 50w on a bird 43 with a pep kit. It also did 13w avg. It happened to be a pretty strong radio. Surely, you've encountered those :)
