President McKinley

No not really but ground noise is really bad out here on Hatteras Island NC, just made first DX contact with it about 30 mins ago. Hatteras to Trinadad, IMax and 300 watts. Guy said it sounded good, I tried a few dif mics, road devil, astaic desk mic, seems the stock mic works as good as those, so far, the mic off the 980 does work, , just this stock mic feels cheap, thought it was interesting they put a brochure in the box saying its not cheap just light, lol

Thank you ! Nice to be here. I just ordered a President Mckinley and it should be here today. I had to replace my Uniden 980 ssb that I purchased used. It worked and still works really well but the display is slowly disappearing. Some segments don't even light up anymore. I am looking forward to the Mckinley as I have read so many good things about it. I will send my Uniden in this winter to be fixed.

One of the common tricks to do with the Icom 7000 mic when upgrading the element in it was to also glue a couple of pennies in it to give it a bit more weight. Open it up and see if you can put a couple of coins in it to do the same.

Balance that Yin-Yang energy. The Universe must have both. Therefore,
man on one coin, and man’s best friend on the other.

Anyone figure out how to change the mic type on the McK?
On my little Bill there is a way right in the manual.

I tried using a few nicer dynamics (Texas Ranger, 636l, etc) and there is barely any audio even with the mic gain cranked in the menu. I can hear it in the talkback also. The stock mic is plenty loud but not a noise canceling which is going to be an issue in a topless jeep.

As far as I know it doesn’t have that feature. Not on my McKinley. Your right the stock mic is pretty good. I made a tiny hole where the element is. Lots better. Try tx to another radio while driving and see what they say. Or tx and slowly place the mic further to see how it picks up further away from your face.

I read somewhere these radios are designed for a mic that has the electret mic element.

I just did a cobra power mic mod and it sounds loud and clear on the McKinley. That mic uses the electret element too.

Well the problem is when its further away the wind noise is just going to be worse.
The Cobra29/636L combo just worked perfect but I want SSB in this rig.

What is your cobra power mic setup? Is it a noise canceling mic?

I am assuming you already tried the stock mic off roading?

No the Cobra is not a noise canceling.

Well...mics are too pricey you can try different ones and keep the one that works. Usually the noise cancelling have a lower output. So mic gain cranked full tilt.

Wheeling isn't going to be much of a problem but its bad with the is top down or windows open. I tried it and it is bad thats why McK ended up in my work truck. But with the band opening more I am putting a 10/11meter rig in the work truck and want to try and make the McK work in the jeep again. Its past topless weather so I guess I have all winter to figure it out.

The 636L mic worked good with the 980SSB but that looks like it came with a dynamic mic.

Ah ok gotcha! So you tried that route.

True, top down(in a Jeep) is here. So ya you have winter to try stuff.

You already tried the Ranger and 636l which are very nice noise canceling mics. So it leads me to believe that these radios are designed for the electret mic.

Have you adjusted AM and SSB modulation on the radio? Both mine were set low from President. Would swing to 5-6w from DK. Now AM and SSB swing to 12w. Also made a difference in being heard.
