Been dissecting radios since I was a kid (1968). I still marvel at the quality of the older 50s, 60s & 70s electronics. I rarely get excited when popping the hood on new stuff. Disposable unserviceable junk for the most part, with cost rather than quality being the main focus. I was pleasantly surprised when opening a UV-5R. So much so I went out and purchased the latest version, a UV-5 RA+. Have not been inside yet, but I will say it's a very sturdy fun radio for any price.
Transmitter output test were conducted at 146 MHz on 2-meters and 445 MHz on 70 Cm. The Baofeng UV-5RA+ radio had a fully charged OEM battery run into a Bird 4311 wattmeter and Bird Termaline 50 ohm load. The test equipment calibration is both recent and accurate.
Using a Bird 5C (5 watt 100-250 MHz) slug the meter showed a better than expected 5.2-watts on 2-meters hi-power, and 1-watt on low-power.
Using a Bird 5E (5 watt 400-1000 MHz) slug the meter showed 3.9 watts on 70 Cm hi-power. Low-power test were conducted using a Bird 250-2 (2.5 watt 250-450 MHz) slug showing 950 milliwatt's output.
