Quansheng UV K5

I ordered one of these today. Of course, I see there are different variations. I have no idea which one Amazon is going to send. I'll need to buy a couple more for different uses.

My main motivation for wanting one is Airband. I've always enjoyed listening to Airband. Full HF receive will do nicely, too.
Airband RX is poor at best, you must update the firmware to even get it to the poor level. The AGC on AM is all messed up, it overloads easily. I live about a mile and half from a major airport and I can barely copy the tower and ground coms. I have several other Chinese HTs that recieved the airband and they are really good, the K5 is not one of them. I have two K5's, both have different firmware installed and both exibit the same poor RX.

What about the K6?

I would interested in your results to see if you get better AM RX.
I haven't heard any aircraft yet. My house has a metal roof and aluminum siding. It's basically a Faraday Cage. Been raining all day. Trying to find the best antenna from my plethora of junk drawer choices.

I slapped the local repeater in. I'm impressed with the receive audio. It's very loud. I like the looks and feel of it. It's been long time since I've programmed an HT, but it's intuitive and easy. I'm getting older, so I'm shocked I've retained the ability. My plan is to snark a few more of these and have them programmed for various uses.

I ike IJV firmware the best, it alows single band mode.
Can you send me that FW file? I just got CHIRP to talk to the radio. I don't know the safest place to get it yet.

I just installed an Eero Mesh system. I think it's blocking several sites. Can't log onto the site for USB driver and CHIRP. Not sure how to allow traffic yet.

Can you download from here? Or is it blocked for you?

(Do not skip ANY steps. You will need to use the provided .py module for Chirp next).

I sent it, there is a PY file that you need to load in Chirp after you do the FW upgrade. Just turn on developer mode on Chirp and the go file, load module. Reach out if you have questions.

I received my radio today (11 days since ordering). The heft was noticeable due to the extra large battery (2200ma) with this model. Screen looks OK, sounds OK, better than my Baofeng uv-5r. Although, it came with a UK plug for the charger. It was shipped from a warehouse in eastern Canada, so they know they are stocking/shipping a UK product. I have a power supply with a 220 UK plug-in , so I am OK. I registered a complaint with AliExpress and we will see where that leads.

Hi Mike, Got a model number for the 2200 battery? The 1600 is BPK5. Thanks!
