Questions about my 21 year old 148 GTL

Robb: thanks for that link! From what I read on his site, he actually sounds normal and secure in his ability. More than can be said for some other sites I looked at.

I've had this Cobra 148GTL since new, it was built in 1991 in the Philippines. It has the side mic and was modified to access 26.815 to 27.995. My questions are: is this still a viable radio? If I need a mic I the future will I be able to find one? If it needed work, would it be worthwhile fixing it or would I be better off starting with a new one? There are probably more but I'll stop for now. Thanks.

I agree with Robb.... New electrolytics and a good re-tune and you'll be happy! I have three, one of them I call Frankenstein because I had to use parts from several different radios but it shines now! :w00t:
The 148 is hard to beat, the newer front mic ones are cheap.... Only the grant is in second place on this one.

It still is but there are a few tech shops that will no longer work on them. In fact, one of them here will not work on ANY radios that are 15 years old or older. The tech will tell you your radio is obsolete and junk and then try to sell you a new export radio like a Magnum or something.. Kinda sucks i think...

So where exactly are these "good techs" that are recommended that I take my radio to? It seems that those on the interweb are all trashing each other. How ironic that I'm asking faceless, anonymous people on the web to recommend faceless anonymous vendors!

Key CB, I-69 exit 78, Warren, Ind.. One of the -BEST- techs i know of... Hes also the warantee guy for Stryker radios... Almost all of my stuff goes to him. And hes CHEAP and will NOT charge you by the hour like some tech shops will.
