Ranger ss 9000 radio?

2950

Hey undertaker I had given the 2950DX a look or two but got the Magnum because of the AM audio. The 2950 does seem like a radio I could learn to like though. I really enjoyed the memory and scan functions on my Magnum and I know the 2950 has that as well as better quality. I just have always liked having a "big" radio. BUT...I really enjoyed talking skip on SSB more then I thought I would. So, I will send off my Magnum and hope the tech can repair the radio, but I do believe I wil be looking at saving my pennies for the 2950.

This is the same as the Voyage VR9000 which I use to own. Good radio but it does drift during warm up. Used as a mobile with a 102 whip and only a peak and tune and it talked good about 35 watts if I remember right. I moved it to a power supply and a I max as a base for about a year before selling it.( due to my motorcycle accident and needing money. ). I wouldn't pass up a VR9000 or SS9000 if the price was right but at $200+ new I would look at a RCI 2950dx for a little more myself.

If your serious about SSB stay away from the 9000 and save a little more to get a 2950DX or one of the newer MaxLog, Grant, Lincoln radios so you can have a little stability. Seems the lower priced Ranger radios are like sail boats on SSB going up and down depending on the temp in or outside. Heck even a old Cobra 148GTL side mic radio is a way better deal. Galaxy and the cheap line Ranger radios are a pain in the ass if your a serious SSB operator. I've had a Ranger 6900F25 and the 158 EDX both drifted all the time, even with the clairfier unlocked I had to fiddle with them all the time depending on temps, almost wore chrome off the 158 EDX clairfier knob before selling it. Save for a Magnum 257, Yeticom Optima, RCI 2950DX, or an old side mic Grant XL or Side Mic Cobra 148GTL.

Uniden 2510

Would a Uniden President 2510 be a good choice? I have read mostly positive things about them and I see some on ebay for sale, but I would be worried about getting a hacked radio. I do like the way they look and I guess I could always buy one and have a good tech go through it.

at this point they are a 30yr old radio,, they are good but most will require some work to get them back where they should be... and they are still bringing good money on the auction site,, so when you factor in the cost of one plus having it worked on you would probly be more into it than the cost of an optima mk3($274 shipped EBAY),, id go for a new solid performer like the radios that were suggested.

those are great radios andmy persona; favorite. but they are old and parts can be hard
to find. imho the 2950dx is a good ssb radio w/ memory but it doesnt store the freq,
like the magnum . and its also mho the 2950 is a slightly noisier reciever.this is
based on the fact some locals are 60 plus miles away and i strained my ears
on my 2950 to hear them. on my magnum i could hear them slightly better
didnt have to strain.2510 also has a very quiet recieve.
