Rebuild the Stellar Turner +3 Microphone

I figured out most of the part numbers needed. But I did send a message to oldgeezer about this. Waiting for his response hopefully

Yes they are a good mic. The problem as always is the average CB'er's tend to be a rather ignorant lot and have gotten worse with time not better. So they are always chasing the wrong things because they do not understand how anything works. So it does not matter if it is mic's or audio or modulation they tend to flock to the wrong thing over and over and over again. The fact that it is 2018 and people are still falling for super swing, NPC, noise canceling power mic's etc....tells the tale to any with eye's wide open!

Compression does not stick well in the CB world because you can not see it on a cheap watt meter. The idea is abstract to most so it goes in one ear and out the other. Just like the idea of having fairly narrow tin can audio does not compute with them when wanting to maximize intelligibility and effective talk power. Most compression systems by there nature hurt fidelity they do not have to but normally they do to keep cost down.

None of the above is bad it is all in how it is implemented. The problem is ignorant people and selfish people always do it wrong. These same people act like trash on the radio making everyone in CB look poorly. Kind of like when less than responsible people attempt to represent gun owners for instance and come off making us all look like ignorant hicks!

If you look at the slim picking on the mic market place today targeting CB directly it is a sad and pitiful marketplace.

True about the Elna lytics. I use Elna, Panasonic and Nichicon depending on what my goal is and the circuit involved. Film caps sound nice too but they can be a bit too neutral at times and can sound almost harsh if over used. I like Wima when I can get them to fit in a board. They tend to be a bit wide for capacitance like all film caps.

Too many electronic projects ! LOL I agree 100%. Using audio grade components

for the Turner.

I have several Turner pluss 3 miks. Only one Turner + 3B.

The Turner 3B has an issue. On another Turner 3 thread . 399 posted the schematic

for me.

Even with Photo Shop. I cannot make out clearly the part numbers for the transistors

and FET. Also some Turner + 3s had a BJT instead of an FET ?.

Can you list these components and their NTE equivalent ?

I'm not fond of "Surplus sales of Nebraska". They have NEW OLD STOCK. As in

Brand NEW.

Turner Pluss three Turner + 3 for sale. $175.00 + ship.

I have a Low Pass & High pass mod for the Turner + 3. When skip is running.

Personally I do not care if my audio is missing most of the bass and the highs.

And I sound like I'm talking from inside of a tunnel. But I'm LOUD.

100%+ modulation is the goal with a minimum of splatter on SSB. AM...Who cares !

The Turner 3 feeds any one of the collection of 858 2nd generation base stations

with built in clipping.

All I care about is blasting thru the QRM and pileup.

For local kibitzing or trading insults. It is the Shure 577B.

I will post the mod. Also the online calculator I used to determine the components.

Really could use the list of BJT and FET components. I think the FET is an NTE 199?

I think a big problem with any power Mic is a lot of people turn them up to 11. This is where you need a receiver radio to hear what you sound like, and a scope doesn't hurt either. My plus 2 always got great reports on ssb with a Pez Jackson. The plus 3 worked great also, on the cobra 2k, until it quit. I stripped the +3, fixed the out of round Mic head and painted it up nice. Still sitting in a box to be reassembled. May just do these mods since its already apart.

I'm an old CB'er from the '70's and just trying to get back into the fun after all these years. I have a couple "old" Realistic 448's that I was having trouble with, so sent them off to have them checked and "tweaked" but it's not sounding promising after 5 mos. In the mean time I bought a new Galaxy DX 959 (with a SSB upgrade peak & tune pkg), (don't really know what that actually accomplished). Anyway, since I am going to use the radio as a base station, and I don't like holding a hand mic I thought I'd try a desk mic. I bought an old Turner Plus 3 and it was already wired to work on a 4 pin Galaxy. My problem is with the internal "spring type" contacts of the power to talk button. It seemed to work for a couple days, then when I begin to push down part way on the button, I could tell on the meters that I had transmit pwr; but when pushed all the way down it would cut that pwr with no transmit modulation.

I really don't know if it's in the spring action or wiring. When I originally opened the bottom of the mic, a coil (12") of rubber elec cord insulation fell out. Someone must have tried to do a make shift repair, but I'm not quite sure where I need to look to try to make a repair.

Any help?

WELL, after tightening up a couple screws inside the base on the metal contact springs of the talk button, I then noticed intermittent power and modulation when moving the wire at the mic plug. After opening the plug I noticed a couple wires that were possibly touching when the mic plug wire was moved slightly. I cut the plug wire and rewired the plug. Now the mic seems to be working OK.

NOW if I could just find out if I'm getting out OK. I've got ears when skip is in(but not local because of my height limitation, trees and location in a HOA ) I just can't seem to be able to get out. I've got 2 vertical Omni directional antennas : A Procomm Patriot 12, mounted on a 16' mast against the side of the house, the top is approx 28'; the 2nd is a Twinpoint Saturn 39" low profile base antenna, mounted on a 6'mast, setting up in a tree in the front of the house to a total hgt of approx 26'-28'. Good/reasonable SWR on both antennas. I'm about 5 miles off IH35 north of Austin, can't seem to even hear the truckers.

I use to love talking skip in my mobile when I was living in South San Antonio near the bases back in the early '70s.

I have a +3B turner it works great i done a complete restore took it all apart i did replace all caps and 90% of the wiring the mic was sandblasted to remove the years of terrible restoration attempts all contacts cleaned the pot was replaced it is a very loud mic and mic gain must be used in moderation otherwise yes it will sound distorted . a very strong mic
