MEMORIAL DAY WEEK-END LSB 16 DX NET

I've been away from CB for a while. Two GMRS groups I'm very actively involved with are diligently setting up a system of linked GMRS repeaters that go from Key West on up to Miami and continuing to Fort Lauderdale. The project has been quite a success, but it has taken up just about all of my radio time.

Memorial Day week-end is just over a month away. It presents a nice opportunity to get both the old and the newer radios out and on the air. Announcing this now also gives us time to get the word out and mark our calendars.

Who's interested?

I will lug the old Kraco SSB 23 channel radio out. I should be around to get on the radio for a bit.

Saturday was a great day. I drove 40 miles to watch my Granddaughter's T-Ball team play against another and we had pizza afterwards. When I left, I talked to an East coast station, switched to 16 and was lucky (sheer luck) to make contact with the U.K. and Ireland (barely enough time to swap signal reports). It made that 40 mile drive back home seem like 15 minutes !

I neglected to mention that I was using a Sirio Predator 2000 with mag mount on the roof of my SUV, and the radio I was using was the President George FCC, so I was only putting out about 11w PEP (no inline amplification was used, because I don't own one).

i tried many times on 16 lsb n only 1 wwdx member at that

I've made the odd contact on 16 LSB over the years. I even talked to a few WWDX members there a year or so ago.
Always very very challenging with the amount of on channel QRM plus the awful splatter from 15 and 17.
It's definately possible to make contact there, but it's not what I would call a fun time ! Much more pleasant on the uppers..........

We went back to LSB 16 for 2 main reasons. First, LSB 38 and the surrounding channels were a mess. Second, some of the guys here still have old 23 channel units.

The QRM from 15 and 17 has been mentioned by a few folks here. On the other hand, we've had some week-ends where LSB 16 was just hopping. For a while, some folks were making contact on LSB 16 and then QSY-ing to LSB 23. Let's see how things go Memorial Day week-end.

I'm going to be camping out on my boat and will have my SSB walkie talkie with me. I'm looking forward to catching up with you guys and hearing the WWDX crowd out there on LSB 16.

The QRM and splatter on 16 are usually worse than 38 these days. With the drop in conditions most (but not all) of the idiots on 38 seem to have disappeared.

And very very very few people only have 23 channel units. Like maybe 1 or 2% of CB'ers. After all, we went to 40 channels way back in 1977.........very nearly a half century ago!

The fact is, although I've had contacts on 16 LSB, I've talked to less people there in the last 20 years than I talk to on 38 or the upper channels in a single day.

I admittedly haven't been on CB much these last few months. Among other things, I've been working with two radio groups that have worked together to launch a GMRS repeater network that now covers from Palm Beach County all the way down to beyond Key West. It has been demanding, but the project has come together nicely. With a lot of that heavy lifting done now and with the summer boating season here, I'll have lots more time to hang out on LSB 16 again. And the SWRs on my Shakespeare 5223 marine CB antenna are spot on!

Let's see where this effort takes us. Memorial Day week-end is the next step in reclaiming LSB 16...or as others have said, to "make LSB 16 great again". Take your pick.
