Requirements for DX

I'm going to have to assume those that think good sounding AM is rare on this band have not heard your transmitter 131. Probably one of the top 10 I've heard and nothing on 75 could be interpreted as noticeably better.
Shockware you are correct I have not heard him and unless he's a ham I probably never will. If he is a ham then someday I might catch him on the bands. I will however concede the point that 131 has good am audio based your knowledge of him.

I think your right. Companies and techs across the country designed them specifically not work

That doesn't mean a thing. I lived in a place for a year where there was nobody on the air. I thought it was my station. No, I went back to my home town and talked to everyone with ease..
There are some very good pre-amps out there, actually some really good ones but most are NOT installed in the typical 11 amp. I used to use a tower mounted gaAs FET preamp on VHF that really helped pull in the weak signals.

Preamps installed in 11m amps generally have a higher noise floor than the radio they are connected too and therefore while making the meter read higher, generally cannot detect a weak signal as good as the radio alone. Along with the fact they have no front end filters and are wideband they tend to overload themselves and often provide such a strong signal to the radio it tends to overload as well. Lots of people hear strange signals with the preamp turned on because of the overloading.

I'll sneak back down when this cycle's over.

Until then AM Hi-Fi is alive and well here without hearing the SSB users complain that we're 10 KHz. wide the second you send audio quality that sounds like you're in the same room. I also like the fact I don't have to wade through an hour at the round table to make a transmission and sit through a dozen belches in the mic during the process. Just saying.....
