WW: I know your just venting. However WW, you been around long enough to know (or expect) a group to relinquish it's normal operating frequency to a contester is a pretty naïve thought.
This also, if you parked 3-4 kc above/below a group and start calling CQ Contest and not expect "static", then you really are mislead.
Most notably Winter Field Day, has certainly not gained the "notoriety" or expectation Summer Field Day has.
Many "groups" have come to realize the Summer Event is one of the largest participation events on the calendar year. This being said, will "give" ground during that weekend. Their are certainly "those" groups they will NEVER.
I see this during the World Wide contests. Many ragchew groups bordering the "edges" of the DX Windows, which will never relinquish space during a contest.
That does not make them bad or unsportsman like operators. They know and understand if they "move" they most certainly will receive the wrath of whom ever they move "near".
Most certainly on 80/40/20 meters. Theses bands, most certainly 80/40 meters in the US are pretty narrow. Band space during nearly all operating times from Sunset to Sunrise is a premium. The spectrum space of 4kc's to nearest group, is a wide allowance to say the least.
All the Best
