RM Italy station 550

I am waiting for delivery on a RM Italy station 550 and the former owner recomends a 20 watt input to drive it. Does anyone know if this is a good thing or normal for this amp? He claims that it comes to life at these wattage settings. This station 550 is for my base and I run a Cobra 148GTL which is currently driving a RM Italy KL-203. I have a RM 35 kicker which if I turn down the power some more would make that RM-35 do about 20 watts and put that inline before the RM Italy staion 550 to drive it. Does any of this sound right? Should I run that 550 straight off my 148 at 3 watts. Also any comments or thoughts about the RM Italy station 550.

20 watts is far too much for that amp. I'd go no more than 10-12 watts pep whether that is SSB or AM at 100 percent modulation. So a 2-3 watt deadkey ought to work ok as long as the radio doesn't have some kind of "swing kit" in it.
