I know I'm gonna get slack for this but I felt I had to share. Yesterday morning I left from my home in Chicago and headed to Wisconsin to pick up my daughter well while talking on my radio I suddenly had no receive and SWR jumped to 3+ across the band on a magnum 257hp and a wilson1000 so I stop at a truck stop near Gurnee Illinois and no matter what I did the wilson was shot. So I go to buy a antenna in the shop only to find the only 2 magnetics are a pyramid type like wal mart sells or a road pro 36" radio shack looking one. Well for $16.99+tax I tried the road pro and after tuning got a 1.4 SWR on 1 and 40 and about a 1.2 on 20 so back to the road I went. I planned on returning this on the return trip but I actually decided to keep it as a back up as I found I was able to get out pretty well and got many reports from truckers that it sounded good. 1 guy told me he had heard me for about 20 minutes before keying up and found we where traveling towards each other and he was still about 3 miles in front of me I talked to him for about another 15 minutes before losing him in the receive. I think my radio has a lot to do with my findings but still so far not a bad antenna for under $20. I can hear many of you screaming at me to get another Wilson....I did this evening a new Wilson 5000 magnetic. My wife drives a new car and I can only use a Mag mount on it. And the roadpro has been put in storage in her trunk just incase.

I do not think anyone will yell at ya.
And a working spare antenna for 16 bucks is no loss, and if you are going on a road trip with family or friends you can always rig up a little cheap radio on a Cigarette lighter plug, throw it in there car and let them use your spare mag mount so you can all talk on radio with out a big investment.

I see nothing wrong with what you did. Or nothing wrong with what your gonna do. You were in a pinch and made a choice, sounds like it worked out.

Hadn't thought about using it as a loner but with my old 29ltd this would be a great loner as friends and family seem to look to me when they are driving long distances with the same statements of "I just want to talk to truckers to stay awake and know where the cops are and oh yeah can I borrow your radar detector too?" Besides if it got lost or stolen what am I out a night at Mc Donalds with the family? As for the radar detector umm...NO!
