I bleave it will sill do it with the antenna unplugged I'll verify this and get video of itSounds like there is a lot of static on the band. That meter is digital and will respond lightning fast to static crashes where an analog meter will barely make a little blip. It could be just millisecond crashes that you don't even hear. Does it do that on a quiet band with a strong signal too?

ok whent to power it up with out the antenna plunged in letting it run and the screen was dead grate.....
was the radio getting its negative supply from the coax shield?

Check your connectionsDC power negative lead not making contact to radio and the radio would be getting it's ground thru the coax cable shield. Much more common in mobile installs but not unheard of in base stations.

They can introduce a lot of static into the receiver because of poor design - too . . .
