SBE Console V no modulation

Well one month to the day my beautiful SBE Console V decided to quit modulating. It shows a dead key of 5 watts on AM and as expected no carrier on SSB. When the mic is keyed I can say AUDIO, PEP reads about 17 watts and it immediately drops back to a 5 watt carrier. The Console V receives both AM/SSB from other stations just fine. It transmits audio for about 1 second before no audio is hear through my monitoring radio. (both AM/SSB). Three different mics, same result.

I can immediately unkey/key and it does the same again and again and again.

Looking for some assistance on pointing me in the right direction for trouble shooting. Don’t mind sending it off to someone for repair its a very nice radio.

I know this is an old post, but SBEs suffer from a through pin solder joint problem. I have experienced no modulation several times, and it was to do with the supply to the audio IC, and another key component... can't remember. These types of faults will tend to show up more in high current demanding areas.

I am WAY earlier in this thread...... mostly just unable to dedicate the time. Still have about 10 caps to change but it seems like when I get these last 10 in... the prior caps will need to be changed again!!!!!!

but I have seen Mike's videos on this radio (Console V) and he speaks of those "pass throughs" on all of them.

I have noticed that the SAMS on this radio (sort of.... they got around to doing the Sidebander V which is the same board... just didn't do the Console V!).... has PC board images....and they seemed to do a little "x-ray vision" thing that CLEARLY shows where all of the "pass throughs" are located. I plan on giving those a good "looking at" too while I am in there.

Sorry for this incredibly late reply, let's just say I've been offline lately (that doesn't mean I have been in jail).
I do have one, and I need to get it back on the bench one day as it failed again. I recently bought a Liner Console V, this is the quite rare Australian 18ch version. It has no RX audio, shouldn't be too difficult, except for if I decide to recap it.
You are exactly right about the traces, it's good exercise for the brain with the whole mirror image thing. I have extracted several through pins, some come out bright and shiny, some like they've been at the bottom of the ocean. I typically replace them with solid copper wire like Mike. However I sometimes just re-solder both sides which doesn't always last, lazy practise really.
Is there something more you would like to know?
I have a Console 6 too, bloody obsolete chip has failed.

Don't fret (ha ha! - a guitar joke). I've got a 2510 that has been on the bench for awhile that needs 10 as well.

One of the best sounding CB radios you can get when working. Excellent receive too. I don't believe it's a cold solder joint problem so to speak. It is a contamination/reaction problem. Primarily with the through pins.

Yes, I fully intend to try to find them all and refresh/redo them. I've seen Mike's video on those.
