Had my folder screwdriver out the other night and let all the smoke out of my grantxl silver face. I had the life off and laid it down on the table while powered on and laid it down on a screw. Poof. When powered now the green ex light is on and that's all. No channel readout. Probing around it seems to have voltage. Whatd I pop?

You may have voltage where are checking for it unfortunately you don't have it for the display. I assume you have no recieve and no transmit just a green light which is fed by the mains DC. There is a regulator for the supply to the display I think it's located at the front of the board if I have my chassis correct. I,m an old man and don't always remember things that I always remembered before.

If you don't have a meter lamp - check the BRT Dim switch - if no change or meter light even gets illuminated - you possibly burned up one or two poles of the MODE switch - wouldn't hurt the final or driver unless the short occurred back there from loose screws - then you have not just a burned up mode switch, but blown traces from the power feed branches that radiate outwards from where the short drew the most amps.

You'd see it as a discoloration on one or more traces - possibly popped open burned up like a fuse element.

Continuity checks will be necessary - unplug radio power - DVM check Power plug to Power switch - turn on power then check power plug to switch thru switch back to board - FROM THAT LOCATION - usually by power choke filter - you should be able to find the traces easily that route from there - but need to know to help narrow this type of search down, where or what screw got loose and where was it at on the board when it "shorted"?

Mode switch handles SSB and AM modes - and does switch toggle the power to areas from itself - so if it burned up - you have one hit part to replace...
