sears roadtalker 40 am ssb usb

I had one of those right after we went from 23 to 40 channels. Loved it! had the best receive of any radio back then. I now have three of them that work and one that doesn't.
Great radio for it's time.
It replaced my Johnson Viking radio.(Which I still have)

Great sounding rig when used with a good power desk mic that I run on the Classic Radio Round Up show from time to time.

Just get a "Radio Shack 5 pin DIN to Cobra 4 pin mic adapter" from the Bay, turn up the modulation a bit inside the chassis, open up the clarifier and you are good to go.

This is the "Slant Face" version:

I have one too. Very true that it can be upgraded. None of the bases for taht time frame had great power supplies all of them where anemic on 110/120. Even the might Cobra 2000 and GE Super Base etc.... could do more power on 12V power supply or battery than on AC. That said what I said about their build quality and the quality of the parts used and the design was 100% right on. Everything in that uni is heat sinked or shielded and almost nothing in a Cobra/Uniden?President from that time was heat sinked other than the finals regulators and almost nothing was shielded.

Look how long it took RCI to upgrade regulators in the all of their chassis and all of the important dides!

All older radio's even cobra's are getting harder to find parts for unless you stock piled parts from years ago or have a mountain of older broken radios to pull parts from. Well that assumes you want a high quality part and one that is like the OEM part.

You can find examples that need nothing that are like new internally and externally for $200 on the other hand a beat up ugly barely working CO bra 2000 will cost you $200-$300 and than you still need to rebuild it and find pretty cosmetic parts for it. In many cases the Sears have not be butchered as badly as your run of the mill Cobra/Uniden/President. Unlike most people on Ebay I think a butchered aka modified radio is worth less money not more. Extra channels normally means some Frankenstein mod done poorly with bailing twine and lubbers 50/50 solder and a blow torch and hot screw driver tip!

I had two of the sloped face model. Ran one as a base with a Turner +2 and a Moonraker IV. Great mix radio, mic and antenna.

The second one I had in my truck...until some @$$ stole it.

Bad thing about getting older is I find my self often saying "I had...I had"
quality we cant buy today.yep i agree on the age thing
