Shooting Star 225 Plus with SRF-7000 transistors??

Found a Shooting Star 225 Plus online for a decent price (I think) of $170.

But it has SRF-7000 in it (MRF-455 equivalents).. which are like 60w max each.

Looks clean otherwise.

Opinions please..

It's going to be something like this.. or an RM Italy 503/7505.. I don't want to spend over like $200 for an amp.. this would be for a base radio setup with 2w dkey on AM..

I'd like to get to 200w or more with something.. but everyone yelled about RM..

You can find those used for like 50-75 bucks. 170 is way too much. Don't waste your money. There are much better amps out there for that kind of money that will do what you're looking for.

Point me in that direction.. everything on EBay that says working is over $150 easily..

My concern with this post was the transistor type..

K3ACZ: I paid $225 for RM HLA-300 few yrs back(Run HF Mobile)...and $150 for RM HLA-150 last yr both from hams and in known working order...so I would not get in big hurry to purchase a little class C splatter box for your location...might raise awareness to your radio's in the local area...

Plus something like this serve more than one purpose...I paid $325 for working AL811 amp few yrs back also...so may be good idea to just shop around and keep your ears open on local repeaters or ask other locals in your area.

K3ACZ Here's another thought...The 757GX have you tested yet? May be modded? Vy easy mod...some flip a switch inside for all band TX/RX and did not sound half bad on AM as long as carrier set low(5-10w) and mic gain set correctly...Hrd lots of those yrs ago when they were fairly new radio

Oh, ok, misunderstood the post. Yes, the SRF7000 is a replacement for the old MRF455. The SRF designation means that Motorola made this particular transistor for a certain company to be installed in their products, they are made in an (X) amount of batches, if I understand it correctly. It may also be an RoHS compliant version of the MRF455.


BJ Radionut is also correct, the amp is also a Class C amp, so it would be a splatterbox, too. I would stay away from anything that is Class C, unless you know how to properly add bias to the amp.

How about a RocketBox 250??

Runs $169 new..

Uses 2x Palomar 9530 Transistors

He says it does about 225w.. sold a few according to feedback..

Anyone have opinions on the RocketBox above, or say a Palomar Skipper type with 2 of the 2290's in it.

The Skipper by Palomar has 4 settings on it.. looks pretty clean.

The Palomar Skipper is a good one, if it's the one I recall correctly.... it has AB biasing with thermal tracking, and they sound very nice over the air. Good SSB delay, too.

If you can snag one of those it would be worth it.
