Later when I receive my book, I'll be doing some enhanced scans for everyone to look at in PDF or any other format if they wish. I also splice together schematics into one continuous flow. I hate schematics that are broken up into several pages. Books take up too much of my workspace. For me, a large monitor solves that issue.
Yup! Watched that one. The switch, when in CB position, is used to pass voltages through to the RF circuits. The contact was flaky and when he pressed on it "just RIGHT!" it would work.

My old eyes....I have often wondered ...if I took the artwork PDFs up to Office Max/Office Depot or another "copy shop" ... WOULD THEY expand and print for me? Or would they claim "can't do it! It is COPYRIGHTED CONTENT!!!!!

So I'm assuming this switch right here is a tone control but it acts more like a NB. On ch. 20 there is this oscillating sound that is present on say ch. 21 when the switch is in the middle. If I flip it to the - the tone decreases but the oscillating is still present. If I switch it to + it disappears entirely. I found that interesting. One would think it would still be present but at a higher pitch.

What is the marking on the switch? Is it a Tone control?
It may be that it is a low pass filter.... meant to cut out high frequency from the audid....bUT...the skirts on the filter are in the right place to knock the whistle down.

It's a right angle triangle. I forgot to mention I spoke with Astatic today and they confirmed we're good on the mic wiring so it would seem that the modulation issue is in the radio... that is assuming they are correct.

From that pic I am more betting that it is a "Delta Tune". IN many of these old AM radios....they put this in so the ON RECEIVE ONLY... you could go both a "little below" and "a little above" frequency....in case the radio on the OTHER end is off frequency.....
Usually the step isn't a LOT.....but in - it is a little low, in + a little high and in the center.. it is right on frequency.....all of this is in RCV only!

Hey CHampo, just letting you know early..... I am not abandoning your cause....but I will be "out of pocket" this Thursday & Friday. Got some activities planned that will have me out of the house and away from the computer. If I recall, I don't think you will have your SAMS manual on the Smokey 23 until later this week?
Remarkably USPS got it here quicker. It is supposed to be delivered today....but you know how that goes. I will probably tinker with it a bit but there's no rush. We can pick it up again this weekend. I really do appreciate the help you've provided and for keeping me in the loop.
