smooth audio?

Since we're just talking about a CB rig and mic (no audio rack stuff), the best CB I've ever heard was a local that ran an old Robyn rig. That thing sounded beautiful....

First off, whoever started that catch phrase 'clean is mean' - I agree with.

To begin with, matching the mic impedance to the radios mic preamp will maximize/optiinize its freq response. Not something that the average CB op is going to be able to do. Then, the mic preamp will need to be made wide open to a wider, flatter response by modifying some of the cap values - as 543 said. 543 also pointed out that the tx filters can allow some response past its rolloff points since they are not brick walls. Having max gain w/o distortion will also benefit. Again; tricky business to do right. Clean radio output in the PA section is also a must.

Sometimes you can just luck out and most of these factors will line up if the radio is in good shape to begin with, and playing with different mics to get the best freq response and gain. But not likely; mostly it is just the luck of the draw - IMO . . .

Oh yeah - nice call on the robyn t-240d. With a d104 they can sound just killer.

I run an electro voice RE20 on my 2517 no other gear just the mic and everyone says best sounding station, with comments like that no need to have anything but just the MIC.I've heard myself on another station and it does sound really sweet and clear.Maybe the best i've heard in my area

Sweet, Is that a 139XLR base?? If so then you have the best of the 8719 and 858 chassis, not to mention the old Robyn, I have a colt tube rig, same as the robyn, not much on the watt meter but the audio is sooo smooooth(y)

Thanks, and yes that's a 139XLR. Love that rig, even more than the 2000GTL. The tx audio just kicks butt, no matter what mic I put on it. I think Exitthirteen said they have a compressor built in, and that is why they have such good punch. I really like the receiver on it., too.

And you're right on the low power with the family of Robyn/Colt/Gemtronix/Teaberry's... mine isn't real strong on output, but gets compliments on the audio.

yes the trc 457/458 and 139xlr do have some caps built in for compression.

Wow....digital sports system... I had the exact same one back in the 70's
